Still further embodiments of the device of the present invention find particular application as a portable hand held electronic device having a display screen or panel for displaying selected scenes from a movie to assist a potential viewer of the movie in making a selection of the movie from available movie titles in a video library or similar . Particular embodiments of the hand held unit are provided with controls in the form of operating buttons to allow operation of the display unit at the discretion of the user.
  • the present invention will be described with particular reference to a portable hand held electronic display unit for displaying movies , videos , video games , software, or similar on a display screen to assist a person in selecting an appropriate, suitable, or desired movie or similar
  • the scope of the present invention is not limited to the described embodiment but rather the scope of the present invention is more extensive so as to include other forms and arrangements of the information display unit and the use of such units in a variety of different applications to display a range of information about a variety of products , services , events or the like .
  • the display device has application in any circumstance where a person requires further information about anything.
  • Reading this information can take a lengthy period of time and requires a certain amount of patience if the consumer is to make an informed selection .
  • Such people solely rely upon the visual and/or graphic information on the front, and perhaps the rear of the movie container without reading any of the text.
  • the reason a person enters a movie rental shop, library or similar is due to the customer' s desire for an audiovisual experience .
  • the selection process usually commences by viewing the cover attached to the front of the case .
  • the information provided on the front cover is designed to catch the eye of the renter and in one picture possibly inform the renter about the type and style of the movie . If interested, the person then takes a few minutes to read the movie summary on the reverse side of the case, such as for example, to learn more about the story line of the movie, the list of main actors in the movie, and the like in order to hopefully create an image in the renter' s mind that will assist with their ultimate selection.
  • New release movies are usually the first choice of the customer since information about such movies is usually current and readily available from sources other than the movie container, such as for example, from advertisements, in reviews by critics published in newspapers, magazines or the like, in publicity material, and other promotional material produced for and on behalf of the movie makers and/or distributors or the like.
  • movies that have been released for some time may have little current publicity material that is readily available or accessible and such information is certainly not fresh in the consumers' mind. The same may be said to a more or less extent about all movies. Consequently, with such movies the consumer spends a longer time reviewing the short summaries about the movie on the reverse side of the case as the consumer moves from one movie to another trying to decide which movie to rent. Therefore, there is a need for a method of selecting movies to rent which is more informative, attractive and user friendly than existing methods and/or is less time consuming than existing methods .

The present invention relates to an audiovisual information display unit for displaying information about a product, a service, an event or similar to a potential user, purchaser, consumer or the like of the product, service, event or similar in order to provide information about the product or the like to assist the user, purchaser, consumer in making a decision about the product by operating the unit to provide the information.
Some embodiments of the present invention relate to a portable electronic information display unit which is used as an awareness tool, a marketing tool, an education tool or similar. Still other embodiments of the present invention relate to hand held electronic display units for displaying movies , movie previews , movie trailers , animations , scenes from computer games , product information material such as how to use the product or the like, advertisements, marketing and publicity material or the like about an occurrence, event, product, item, service or the like.
Although the present invention will be described with particular reference to a portable hand held electronic display unit for displaying movies , videos , video games , software, or similar on a display screen to assist a person in selecting an appropriate, suitable, or desired movie or similar it is to be noted that the scope of the present invention is not limited to the described embodiment but rather the scope of the present invention is more extensive so as to include other forms and arrangements of the information display unit and the use of such units in a variety of different applications to display a range of information about a variety of products , services , events or the like . The display device has application in any circumstance where a person requires further information about anything.
When a potential customer enters a movie rental shop, retail outlet, movie library or similar retail establishment or service provider the customer is faced with a bewildering choice of movies to rent, borrow or purchase from the thousands of different titles that are on display or are available for rent at any given time. The selection of appropriate movies is a daunting prospect and is time consuming, particularly as little or no information is readily available about the movie, such as plot, actors, directors, where and when the story takes place or the like. Currently, a typical customer must read the short summary of the movie on the reverse side of the container case for the movie rental either on the back of the DVD case, VCD case or video cassette case to obtain any information . Reading this information can take a lengthy period of time and requires a certain amount of patience if the consumer is to make an informed selection . Also, there is an increasing proportion of the population who are less comfortable with reading written text or similar to obtain their information and instead rely on non written visual and/or aural communication for their information such as animation, movies , graphics , or the like. Such people solely rely upon the visual and/or graphic information on the front, and perhaps the rear of the movie container without reading any of the text. The reason a person enters a movie rental shop, library or similar is due to the customer' s desire for an audiovisual experience . Thus , there is a need to provide non written or text information about a movie to communicate information about the movie to a potential renter to assist them in their choice of movie.
When a consumer wishes to rent, borrow or purchase a movie the selection process usually commences by viewing the cover attached to the front of the case . The information provided on the front cover is designed to catch the eye of the renter and in one picture possibly inform the renter about the type and style of the movie . If interested, the person then takes a few minutes to read the movie summary on the reverse side of the case, such as for example, to learn more about the story line of the movie, the list of main actors in the movie, and the like in order to hopefully create an image in the renter' s mind that will assist with their ultimate selection.
New release movies are usually the first choice of the customer since information about such movies is usually current and readily available from sources other than the movie container, such as for example, from advertisements, in reviews by critics published in newspapers, magazines or the like, in publicity material, and other promotional material produced for and on behalf of the movie makers and/or distributors or the like. However, movies that have been released for some time may have little current publicity material that is readily available or accessible and such information is certainly not fresh in the consumers' mind.
Accordingly, it is one of the aims of the present invention to provide a method and device for providing information about a product, service, event or the like in a more comprehensible manner and/or in a less time consuming manner. Another aim of the present invention is to provide non written audiovisual forms of information that are more understandable to the recipient of the information . According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a display unit for providing information about a product, service, event, occurrence or similar in a form that is comprehensible to a recipient of the information and/or to a user of the display unit, the said unit comprising a body having a display means for displaying the information about the product etc. , the said body provided with a control means for controlling operation of the display means so as to selectively display the information, and a storage means containing the information to be displayed in a stored format to act as a source of the information wherein selective operation of the control means at the discretion of the user allows selected information in the stored format of the storage means to be displayed on the display means thereby providing the information to the user in a format that is more readily comprehended by the recipient of the information and/or user.

One embodiment of the present invention is dedicated to a single environment, such as for example, inside a single venue . One example of the venue is the video library whereas another example is a department store, speciality shop or the like. In this embodiment, the display device of the present invention is capable of compiling information about the presentations displayed on the screen, such as for example, to provide the shop with statistical data about the viewing habits of people using the display units within the venue. Such data could include how many times a particular movie is previewed, the number of times it is rented, the number of times it is rejected, and the like. By compiling statistics about the viewing habits of people the venue is better able to provide the exact products that appeal to the particular part of the population visiting the venue i.e. the demographics of people interested in a specific product. The information compiled by the display unit can be used to provide value added features of the display unit.
In another embodiment, the venue can provide the movie presentation to a suitable receiver using a suitable link. In this embodiment, the storage means of the display unit is a centralised storage facility which sends information wirelessly or otherwise to the display unit or units . The centralised storage facility sends information to the display unit, mobile telephone, PDA, MP3 or other electronic device having a screen capable of displaying the movie presentation.
In another embodiment, the storage means may be a low powered transmitter that is capable of sending a transmitted signal within the venue to display units located at different locations around the venue to enable the display units to be used in the venue, such as, the shop, video library or the like. The transmitted signal can take any form such as wireless transmission, infra red transmission, microwave link, blue tooth, or other. Further, the signal is for use within the boundaries of the venue only and is not transmitted outside of the venue, thus restricting it to the venue and use within the venue. Thus, a self contained video presentation system using a display unit is provided as a way of obtaining information when in the venue .
According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a video presentation system for use within a venue for providing information about a product, event, occurrence, activity or the like, said presentation being restricted to the venue when in the venue, comprising a display unit located within the venue for receiving information about the product etc., from a storage means, said display unit having a display screen for displaying the information in a movie presentation or animated format, said storage means being linked to the display screen, said display unit being provided with control means which are selectively operable to display a selected presentation on the display screen in accordance with the requirements of the user. Optionally, a USB socket or port, firewire or other fast connection mode 34 is provided in the top side of unit 2 remote from memory card slot 16. Such a fast connection enables the user of unit 2 to download movies directly to the unit from a computer, the internet or from a central storage facility located in the shop or library. In this embodiment there is no need for a separate memory card or similar to be inserted into the unit as this would only be possible if the device had the option of an onboard chip or in built recordable memory option, whether it be to the removable or non removable memory card or internal memory chip. A small LED light 35 or similar to indicate when the unit is docked and charging that can change colour when the battery level is low and the device is not docked and charging may be provided also. This light can be positioned on the front side or any other visible side .
The unit of the present invention would only require reasonably simple programming to enable it to be operated, particularly in one of the more simple embodiments described, having few features. The unit would require very little memory located within the unit. This differentiates the unit of the present invention from other electronic devices having a screen that are capable of displaying and multi processing information as currently available computers such as laptops , PDA devices or mobile phones currently require large memories and complex programming and circuitry.
The operating system or architecture of the display device of the present invention will now be described with particular re erence to Figure 9. The IDU system architecture is described in general terms to provide an indication of the operation of the display device. It is to be noted that other embodiments of the display device may have specific areas of detail that can be added to this embodiment as required.
Processor 101. The system processor or CPU is responsible for executing all system software, and controlling all peripherals including the display, audio, power management, and data communications. The processor is typically suited for low power embedded applications for maximum battery life. Any suitable or desirable processor can be used.
LCD 101. The LCD displays video and text to the user. It is typically backlit colour (CSTN or TFT depending on cost and quality requirements) , although on very low cost embodiments, a monochrome display can be used. Touch Panel 102. A touch panel may be included to gather information from the user via a screen press operation. This is advantageous where a flexible input mechanism is desired, as button configuration is coded in software and can be changed at any time. The touch panel can be resistive or capacitive in nature. RAM 104, FLASH /OTP 105. The RAM and FLASH / OTP form the memory of the operating system or architecture. Code is stored permanently in OTP or semi-permanently in flash memory. Flash is useful where re-programming the device in the field is desirable . RAM is the working memory required by the processor for code execution. Depending on the software architecture, the system code may also be copied to RAM prior to execution. Other variations are also possible.
Docking Connector 106. A docking connector at the base of the unit will allow the device to be docked to batteries of a base station or cradle. This provides a convenient λhome' for the device when not in use, and allows the unit to charge while docked. In addition, the device may also have network or other communication physical layer connections routed through the docking connector, thereby allowing the device to connect to a central computer or server to update its firmware, or application data while docked.
Power Supply and Charging Circuit 107, DC input 107a. The power supply and charging circuit is responsible for conditioning the supply power and providing the required voltages and current to the system modules. In addition, it is responsible for charging and monitoring the internal battery / batteries . Power is supplied via a DC input jack or the docking connector. Battery 108. The internal battery will provide power to the system when it is not connected to an external power source such as the docking connector. The battery may be lithium ion, nickel meta-hydride, or other suitable chemistry based systems for producing the required voltage. Keyboard and Outputs 109. The unit may include a keyboard for gathering user input. This keyboard may consist of one or more buttons of varying size and location. Outputs including LEDs for function indication may also be provided. A separate volume input may also be provided to allow the user to vary the speaker or headphone volume to a desired level .
Audio Codec 110. Sound is generated using an audio codec connected to a system processor. The codec converts a digital PCM stream to analogue audio, and may also include an amplifier and volume control. Audible sound is then generated from the analogue audio signal via inbuilt speakers or headphones (a headphone jack would be provided on the device) .
SD/MMC Card 111. A socketed SC/MMC card may be provided to allow additional memory to be added / exchanged. Media content may be stored on this card, such that upgrading media content on the device would be achieved by swapping the card with another card which has been programmed with the updated content.
Ethernet 112a, 802.11 112b, USB 112c. A range of data communication schemes may be provided on the device to allow easy exchange of data with a server, PC, or other IDU devices . Data exchange may include updated media content, user feedback information or the like. Standard USB/Ethernet sockets may be provided on the device, and/or routed out via the docking connector. Wireless protocols including 801.11 b/g, Bluetooth and Zigbee may also be included for wireless data exchange.
Other variations and embodiments of the operating system or architecture are possible. Operation of the unit of the present invention will now be described.
When releasing a new movie or rental, or reinstating old movies , a new display unit having a memory card dedicated to that movie in accordance with the present invention or a replacement memory card containing the movie preview, trailer or computer game is also sent to the video library along with a supply of the movies or games either on DVD, VCD or cassette. If the library has existing units the old memory card can be replaced with the new memory card applicable to the new release movie or reinstated older movie. The old memory card can then be sent back to the distributor for reuse or the unit can be replaced and/or exchanged to clean, update, service or the like the unit before reissuing the display unit with another memory card or an updated memory card or the like .
In one form the memory cards use in the device of the present invention are the same as or very similar to memory cards, memory sticks or other memory or storage devices that are currently used with digital cameras , PDAs , MP3 players and other currently used storage units and/or devices . In some embodiments the memory cards can be customised so that they are only operable in designated units so as to reduce or minimise theft of the cards and/or devices. Typically, the memory cards or memory devices are read only devices or are rewritable thereby allowing the chips to be reused for storing new information.
The memory card can contain other promotional or commercial material including special offers provided by the video library. The unit would sit on the shelves in front of the movies for rent. In this position the unit would be "docked" and charging. The consumer would simply remove the unit from the docking station push the play button to allow the movie to be displayed, and optionally use the remaining buttons selectively to control other functions of the display unit. The other control functions include controls for displaying additional information from the card, and then return the unit to the docking or recharging station. The display device is programmed to return to the start by default. If the movie is not selected for rental the customer moves onto the next movie and repeats removal of another unit for displaying the next movie and so on until an appropriate movie or movies are selected. On being replaced back into its storage position, each display device defaults to the beginning of the information stored within the unit so as to be ready for the next potential renter.
In addition to the device being used to display movies the device could also be used as a general product information tool for many products , services , events or occurrences to promote such activities in the marketplace, such as tourist events or forthcoming events or activities such as sports events , cultural events , theatre productions , plays or the like . Furthermore , the unit can be used in marketing other in-house or in-store promotions or the like . Use of the device of the present invention could reduce the need for sale assistants or other assistants, such as in tourist offices, booking offices or the like to provide information relating to the products or services, and thus would lead to lower labour costs. Advantages of the present invention include the following. The device of the present invention allows a consumer to instantly display a preview, trailer or other promotional material about a movie or other as the consumer browses through the movies that the video library has to offer as a more enjoyable and attractive option. The unit would greatly enhance the movie rental/sale industry by providing a means from which the consumer can make a more informed, enjoyable and appropriate selection when renting or purchasing a movie . This device would rejuvenate or revive the rental or sale of movies irrespective of the age of the movie such as whether it was an old release movie or a current release movie .
Furthermore this new device would encourage more people to actually step into the video rental stores, retail stores, other establishments, to experience this new way of renting or purchasing movies . Similar advantages would also be available in connection with other activities.
Colour coding of the cases or body of the display unit in accordance with the classification, type, style, category or general marketing of a movie would assist in appropriate selection of a suitable movie, such as for example, movies having a PG or 6 classification suitable for children .
Operation of the play button of the device of the present invention would enable a consumer to be able to watch typically from 1 to 3 minutes of excerpts from the movie and be able to instantly decide if the movie is to the liking of the person and accordingly is to be rented or bought. The unit will provide a more efficient, effective and enjoyable way for consumers to rent or purchase movies .
Operation of another embodiment of the present invention includes the following. In one situation a supply of display units is available for use by customers of a video library on entering the shop or similar, such as for example a display unit in accordance with the present invention is obtained at the video library counter. The display unit is then carried by the person as they walk through the shop. In one embodiment, the display unit is connected to a suitable docking station or similar, such as through a physical connection using an electrical conductor, corresponding to the particular movie that a person wishes to view. The device is operated and the information displayed. The person can then disconnect the unit and move onto another station where a different movie can be viewed or previewed and so on around the shop .
In one embodiment, the display units of the present invention are mobile within the establishment and are used for a variety of purposes e.g. menus, entertainment, advice, instruction or the like. In another embodiment, the display unit remotely interacts with the movie, such as for example, by wireless connection such as infra red, Blue Tooth or similar. As the display unit is interactive, as the person steps in front of the movie, aims the device at the selected movie or similar, the particular movie is displayed on the unit automatically. The person can then wander around the shop with the one display unit previewing a variety of movies in turn, merely by the person halting and standing in front of the particular movie display stand in the shop. The display unit is used for statistical information gathering about habits of persons to provide information about the information being displayed, demographics of users or the like.
When finished selecting the movies the person deposits the display unit back in the shop when renting the movies ready for the next person to use the display unit.
In a still further embodiment, the display unit can be provided with a large memory card or similar storing many different movies so that a person on entering the video library can select a display unit and a large memory card having a particular type or genre of movies and move to a lounge area, or similar, to scroll through the selection of movies so as to preview a greater number of movies in a short time . After deciding on the movies that are to be rented, the person can then request their selected movies from the counter of the rental store, or from the rack of movies , and rent and/or buy the movies in the normal manner. After which the display unit and memory card can be deposited at the shop or similar. Additionally, the device could serve as a full length movie viewing unit as the consumer could download movies from the internet or personal computer onto a larger capacity memory card. The movie libraries could rent out movies using this memory card format so that only movie memory cards are being rented and not DVDs, VCDs or video cassettes. The card could then be inserted into the unit, which is rented to customers for short time periods enabling the consumer to watch the movie at a remote location, such as at home using the video out or S-Video socket by plugging in the device into the television or monitor in order to watch a larger picture i.e. rent a DVD player for use in hotels or the like. Alternatively, the consumer can watch the movie whilst traveling in the same manner that a consumer uses a portable CD player or portable MP3 player. The consumer could then store a library of movies or music on various memory cards for replay at a later date .
The unit could also double as an MP3 or audio player when used in a different mode or even to play music video clips .
