Description A METHOD FOR REMINDING PROGRAMS IN TELEVISIONS
[001] Technical Field
[002] The present invention relates to a method for displaying a predetermined image inside a window at a predetermined time while watching another image on a television, and a television in accordance with this method. [003] Prior Art
[004] As it is known, by means of the Picture in Picture (PiP) function another program can also be simultaneously displayed on a certain part of the screen while watching a program. [005] In the state of art, there are various patents utilizing this function. One of these is the United States Patent Application No US6697124, wherein display window function within a smart picture is disclosed. According to this system, the location and the size of the window is adjusted automatically in the most suitable way in accordance with the motion, text and figures repeated in the main picture. [006] In the invention disclosed in the International Patent Application WO2004004348, which is another document known in the art, the programs selected as mostly viewed appear in a window at the corner of the main picture at time of their commencement. [007] On the other hand, in the International Patent Application WO2004068841 , the programs selected from the menu of the interactive television are reminded to the viewer at the time of their commencement. [008] Moreover, mechanisms which give off a written or a tagged alert at an appropriate part of the screen when the broadcast of the programs which are pre-stored in the memory of the television commence are also known in the art. [009] Moreover, there are applications wherein the television changes the channel directly to the relevant channel of the pre-selected program when its broadcast commences. [010] As it can be observed from the disclosed examples, in one group of the current alert mechanisms the content of the program is not displayed, instead only an alert signal is given off. However, the user who has entered the reminder quite a long time ago has hard time in deciding whether to quit watching the program he/she is currently viewing and turn to the pre-selected channel when this alert is given off simply because he/she cannot see the content of the program. [011] Furthermore, written or tagged alerts cannot sufficiently attract the attention of the user who is already watching a program. [012] However, a problem observed in mechanisms which switch directly to pre-selected programs is that the main program viewed is interrupted although the user might have changed his/her mind about watching the pre-selected program.
[013] Furthermore, as there might be delays/postponements in the broadcasts, the user is compelled to watch the programs he/she does not prefer when he/she switches to the pre-selected channel without having the chance preview its content.
[014] A Brief Description of the Invention
[015] The object of the invention is to enable display, on a certain part of the main screen, the content of the program desired to be viewed while watching another program, provided that its time of broadcast is pre-stored. In this way, it is aimed to raise customer satisfaction by enabling the user to be reminded of the commencement of the program he/she wants to watch without interrupting the program he/she is currently watching by displaying the content thereof.
[016] The method realized in order to attain these objects of the invention diverges from prior art applications as the program, which is pre-stored by the user to be viewed at the time of its commencement, is displayed in a window on an appropriate part of the main picture.
[017] In different embodiments of the invention, the picture inside the window can be ac¬ companied by vocal, written, vibratory and tagged alerts.
[018] The user can either choose to keep the picture inside the window or enlarge it to cover the whole screen. The window closes if the user does not accept and/or does not reply within a certain interval. The user can also be reminded again after a certain period of time once the window closes.
[019] The television, which is developed in accordance with this method, comprises a mechanism wherein the user is able to make the required adjustments and a control unit which stores the data entered through this mechanism and which opens the window at the pre-selected time. The source of the picture displayed inside the window can be a television broadcast, a video camera, a computer, and a video/VCD/DVD player.
[020] The problems observed in the prior art are eliminated with this invention as it is able to remind the user of the commencement of the program by displaying it inside a window on an appropriate part of the screen without interrupting the main program.
[021] A Detailed Description of the Invention
[022] The method and a television thereof realized in order to attain the objects of the present invention are illustrated in the accompanying figures, wherein;
[023] Figure 1 - is a flow chart of the method which is the subject of the invention.
[024] Figure 2 - is a perspective view of the television which is the subject of the invention.
[025] The components in the figures have each been numbered corresponding the following: 1. Television
2. Screen
3. Window
[026] The television (1), which is the subject of the invention, comprises at least one screen (2) whereon the pictures are displayed. The television (1) has a function to open a window, at a certain part of the said screen, wherein a second picture is displayed.
[027] The television, apart from its function to display television broadcasts, has the capability to display images received from other sources such as a video camera, a computer, a video, a VCD/DVD player.
[028] Moreover, the said television (1) has a mechanism (not shown) which enables the user to enter data and a control unit (not shown) which can store the data entered through this mechanism and, then, which can perform appropriate processes with these data.
[029] By means of data entry mechanism the user is able to enter data regarding the source (K) and time (Tp) of the program he/she wishes to view or be reminded of and various other preferences such as accept/reject. This mechanism can be a keypad/ buttons etc. arranged on a remote control and/or on the television.
[030] These data are stored in the memory of the control unit. The control unit controls time (t) by means of a timer situated within its structure. It starts to play the picture received from the pre-determined source (K) by opening a window at a pre-selected time.
[031] The display window (3) can be on any part of the screen (1) and can have any shape and size. These options can be added to the television during production or can be installed later.
[032] The method which is the subject of the invention and which is applied to the afore¬ mentioned television (1) comprises the following steps:
[033] a. the user enters the time (Tp) and/or source (K) of the picture to be reminded of
(101);
[034] b. when the time comes (t=Tp) (102), the window (1) opens on a certain part of the screen (2) (103);
[035] c. one or more of the written, tagged, vocal and animated alerts accompanies the picture inside the window (104);
[036] d. when the user accepts the picture inside the window (105) the picture continues to be displayed on the entire (107) or on a part (108) of the screen;
[037] e. if the user does not accept it, the window closes and the reminder record is erased (109).
[038] In another embodiment of the invention, between the steps d) and e) the following steps are performed;
[039] f. when the user does not accept the picture inside the window, he/she is asked after
a certain period of time (Te) whether he/she wants to be reminded (to postpone the reminder) again (110);
[040] g. if the user accepts postponement, the steps are repeated by returning back to step b) after a certain period of time (Te) (111).
[041] In the method, which is the subject of the invention, the alerts accompanying the picture inside the window can be various sounds, flashing signs and other similar signals. However, in one embodiment of the invention, it is also possible to emit this alert by means of a vibration or a sound arranged on a remote control.
[042] By using the buttons arranged on the television and/or on the remote control, the user is able to send information to the control unit such as the data regarding the source and time of the reminder, whether he/she wants to accept or reject the picture inside the display window and/or whether he/she wants to be reminded or not.
[043] Industrial Applicability
[044] The user enters data regarding the source and time of the program he/she wants to be reminded of by using the television menu. Only a single program is displayed on the screen when the pre-stored time of commencement of the program to be reminded of has not yet started. At the time of commencement of the pre-stored program, a display window appears on one part of the screen and the pictures taken from the pre-selected source are displayed. In order to attract the attention of the user, flashing, vocal, vibratory, tagged and similar alerts accompany the display window for a certain period of time.
[045] By using a remote control the user is able to close this window or to enlarge it so that it covers the whole screen. Furthermore, if the broadcast of the program to be viewed has not yet commenced due to delays, the user can request to be reminded again after a certain period of time.
[046] The method which is the subject of the invention can also be used for other purposes. For instance, an image from a camera can appear at the corner of the television screen at pre-determined times while watching television. In this way, it is possible monitor a baby or a patient sleeping in another room or the surroundings of a house.
[047] Within the context of the fundamental principles disclosed herein, it is possible to develop various embodiments of the alert unit which is the subject of the invention. The examples are disclosed herein only to provide a clearer understanding and the alert unit which is the subject of the invention cannot be restricted with these examples. The invention is principally as disclosed in the claims.
