Abstract
A combination temperature exposure indicator (90) suitable for attachment to, or association with, a host product has a substrate, a freeze indicator (122) supported by the substrate and a cumulative ambient time-temperature indicator (124) also supported by the substrate The freeze indicator can provide a visual indication of exposure of the freeze indicator to a freezing or near- freezing temperature and the cumulative time-temperature indicator can provide a visual indication of exposure of the cumulative time- temperature indicator to a predetermined cumulative tune-temperature value Also disclosed are a combination freeze indicator and threshold temperature indicator, a combination threshold indicator and cumulative temperature indicator, and three-way combination indicators that can provide indications of cumulative past temperature exposure, exposure to freezing temperatures and exposure to a temperature above a threshold.
Claims
1. A combination temperature exposure indicator suitable for attachment to. or association with, a host product, the combination temperature exposure indicator comprising:
(a) a substrate; and
(b) a freeze indicator ( 10) supported by the substrate wherein the freeze indicator ( 10) can provide a visual indication of exposure of the freeze indicator ( 10) to a freezing temperature; characterized in that the combination temperature exposure indicator further comprises a cumulative ambient time-temperature indicator (100, 212) supported by the substrate in that the cumulative time-temperature indicator (100, 212) can provide a visual indication of exposure of the cumulative time-temperature indicator (100, 212) to a predetermined cumulative time- temperature value and in that the cumulative time-temperature indicator (100, 212) and the freeze indicator (J 0) have visually similar appearances.
2. A combination temperature exposure indicator according to claim 1 characterized in that both the freeze indicator ( 10) and the cumulative time temperature indicator have the appearance of the same regular geometric shape, the shape optionally being a circle.

A combination temperature exposure indicator according to claim 1 characterized in that the visual indications provided by the freeze indicator (10) and the cumulative time-temperature indicator (100, 212) are provided in a combined display area wherein the area of one visual indication lies within the area of the other visual indication.
4. A combination temperature exposure indicator according to claim 1 characterized in that the cumulative time-temperature indicator (100, 212) is supported on the substrate by the freeze indicator (10) or is supported on the substrate in side-by-side relationship with the freeze indicator ( 10).
5. A combination temperature exposure indicator according to claim 1 characterized in that the freeze indicator ( 10) and the cumulative time-temperature indicator ( 100, 212) have visually similar end points.
6. A combination temperature exposure indicator according to claim 5 characterized by comprising a reference zone having a similar appearance both to the freeze indicator ( 10) and to the cumulative time-temperature indicator ( 100. 212) at the end points of the I'rce/e indicator
57 ( 10) and to the cumulative time-temperature indicator (100, 212).
7. A combination temperature exposure indicator according to any one of claims I to 6 characterized by further comprising a threshold indicator (208. 210) supported on the substrate to indicate exposure of the combination indicator to a temperature above a threshold,

A combination temperature exposure indicator according to claim 7 characterized in that the freeze indicator ( 10) is initially transparent, both the cumulative time-temperature indicator (100, 212) and the threshold indicator (208, 210) are disposed beneath the freeze indicator ( 10) in relation to a viewer and both the cumulative time-temperature indicator ( 100, 212) and the threshold indicator (208, 210) are viewable through the freeze indicator (10).
9. A combination temperature exposure indicator according to claim 8 characterized in that the cumulative time-temperature indicator (100, 212) is initially transparent and the threshold indicator (208, 210) is viewable through the cumulative time-temperature indicator ( 100, 212).

A combination temperature exposure indicator according to claim 8 characterized by having a viewable upper surface and three viewing windows in the upper surface wherein the freeze indicator ( 10), the cumulative ambient time-temperature indicator (100, 212) and the threshold indicator (208, 210) are separately viewable through a respective one each of the viewing windows.
1 1. A combination temperature exposure indicator according to claim y characterized by comprising an RFID tag.
12. A combination temperature exposure indicator according to any one of claims 1 to 6 characterized in that the freeze indicator ( 10) comprises:
(a) an indicator volume;
(b) an indicator dispersion of solid particles dispersed in a liquid medium, the indicator dispersion being contained in the indicator volume and being capable of coagulating to provide an irreversible appearance change when subject to freezing; and
(c) at least one vapor block member extending around the indicator volume to prevent loss of liquid vapor from lhe indicator dispersion.

A combination temperature exposure indicator according to any one of claims 1 to 6 characterized in that the freeze indicator (10) comprises a dispersion of solid inorganic pigment particles in an aqueous dispersion medium, the dispersion exhibiting an irreversible appearance change in response to freezing of the dispersion, an indicator volume containing the inorganic pigment dispersion and a viewing window for viewing the dispersion, the freeze indicator ( 10) optionally comprising an attachment device for securing the indicator to a host product to be monitored.
14. A combination temperature exposure indicator according to any one of claims I to 6 characterized by comprising an RFID tag.

A combination temperature exposure indicator according to any one of claims 1 to 6 characterized in that the cumulative time-temperature indicator (100, 212) is initially transparent and the threshold indicator (208, 210) is viewable through the cumulative time- temperature indicator ( 100, 212).
16. A combination temperature exposure indicator suitable for attachment to, or association with, a host product, the combination temperature exposure indicator comprising:
(a) a substrate; and
(b) a freeze indicator (10) supported by the substrate wherein the freeze indicator (10) can provide a visual indication of exposure of the freeze indicator (10) to a freezing temperature; characterized in that the combination temperature exposure indicator further comprises a cumulative ambient time-temperature indicator (100, 212) supported by the substrate to provide a visual indication of exposure of the cumulative time-temperature indicator ( 100, 212) to a predetermined cumulative time-temperature value and a threshold indicator (208, 210) supported on the substrate to indicate exposure of the combination indicator to a temperature above a threshold and in that the freeze indicator ( 10) is initially transparent, both the cumulative time- temperature indicator ( 100, 212) and the threshold indicator (208, 210) are disposed beneath the freeze indicator (10) in relation to a viewer and both the cumulative lime-temperature indicator
( 100, 212) and the threshold indicator (208. 210) are viewable through the freeze indicator (10).
17. Λ combination temperature exposure indicator suitable for attachment to, or association with, a host product, the combination temperature exposure indicator comprising:
(a) a substrate; and
59 (b) a freeze indicator ( I ϋ) supported by the substrate wherein the freeze indicator (10) can provide a visual indication of exposure of the freeze indicator (10) to a freezing temperature- characterized in that the combination temperature exposure indicator further comprises a cumulative ambient time-temperature indicator (100, 212) supported by the substrate to provide a visual indication of exposure of the cumulative time-temperature indicator ( 100, 212) to a predetermined cumulative time-temperature value and in that the freeze indicator (10) comprises an indicator volume and an indicator dispersion of solid particles dispersed in a liquid medium, the indicator dispersion being contained in the indicator volume and being capable of coagulating to provide an irreversible appearance change when subject to freezing.
18. A combination temperature exposure indicator according to claim 17 characterized in that the freeze indicator further comprises at least one vapor block member extending around the indicator volume to prevent loss of liquid vapor from the indicator dispersion.
19. A combination temperature exposure indicator suitable for attachment to, or association with, a host product, the combination temperature exposure indicator comprising:
(a) a substrate; and
(b) a freeze indicator (10) supported by the substrate wherein the freeze indicator (10) can provide a visual indication of exposure of the freeze indicator (10) to a freezing temperature; characterized in that the combination temperature exposure indicator further comprises a cumulative ambient time-temperature indicator (100, 212) supported by the substrate to provide a visual indication of exposure of the cumulative time-temperature indicator ( 100, 212) to a predetermined cumulative time-temperature value and in that the freeze indicator (10) comprises a dispersion of solid inorganic pigment particles in an aqueous dispersion medium, the dispersion exhibiting an irreversible appearance change in response to freezing of the dispersion, an indicator volume containing the inorganic pigment dispersion and a viewing window for viewing the dispersion, the freeze indicator ( 10) optionally comprising an attachment device for securing the indicator to a host product to be monitored.
20. Λ method of supplying a perishable products optionally a vaccine or syringe, for use, the method being characterized by comprising: a) affixing a combination temperature exposure indicator according to any one of claims 1 to 6 to each individual unit of a batch of units of the perishable product at a distribution point;
60 b) transporting the batch of units of the perishable product, each having a combination temperature sensitive indicator affixed thereto, to α point of use; c) at the point of use, inspecting the combination indicators; and d) at the point of use, selecting for use a perishable product bearing an indicator displayir a satisfactory exposure indication,
21. A method according to claim 20 characterized in that the combination temperature sensitive indicator is responsive to freeze exposure and to cumulative ambient temperature exposure.
