The present application claims priority from Australian Provisional Patent Application No 2006902335 filed on 4 May 2006, the content of which is incorporated herein by reference.
Introduction to the Invention
This invention relates to the recordal of data and information following a motor vehicle accident or similar incident and in particular, a booklet and recordal device for maintaining and distributing accurate data of such incidents.
Background to the Invention
Motor vehicle accidents are unfortunately an ever increasing fact of everyday life for many motorists. Motor vehicle accidents of virtually any magnitude from minor bumps to serious accidents generally result in damage to a vehicle requiring repair and insurance claims. Motor vehicle accidents usually involve more than one vehicle and often, after an accident or incident has occurred, the drivers involved can be under stress to varying degrees and it is often difficult for the drivers involved to ensure that they collect all the necessary data and information with respect to the incident at the time and in a manner satisfactory for forwarding to insurance companies, police, emergency service workers and all parties involved in the incident. Often, motorists are left scrambling for pieces of paper and pens at the site of an accident and the added stress of locating suitable materials for recording the details of an accident and the other driver's details, often detracts from an accurate recordal of information required. It would be desirable to provide a booklet or similar recording device adapted for carrying in the glove box, or other area of a motor vehicle, which is particularly adapted for recording the type of information required at the scene of an accident.
Statements of the Invention
In one aspect the invention provides a means for recording information associated with vehicles involved in an accident comprising: a booklet having a plurality of detachable sheets, each sheet having identical spaces for recording the information, each space preceded by text indicating the nature of the information to be recorded in each space, such that all recorded information is present on all sheets in the plurality of sheets wherein each of said detachable sheets is adapted for recording identical information from each individual involved in said accident; whereupon conclusion of recordal of the information, a sheet of the plurality of sheets is detached and retained by each individual involved in the accident. The information may include any one or more of personal details of each driver and/or owner of each vehicle involved, vehicle details and circumstances or nature of the accident.
The plurality of sheets may be folded to fit within the booklet.
In another aspect the invention provides an accident and/or incident data recording means adapted for use in a motor vehicle or similar situation comprising a booklet for recording data, said booklet including suggestions of the type of data appropriate for recordal in the event of an accident and/or incident where said data recording means includes a recording portion of said booklet adapted to receive input data from a user wherein said data recording means includes a provision for removal of said recorded data or a copy thereof and provision for the retention of said recorded data or a copy thereof in said booklet.
The data recording means may include provision of data for one or a plurality of drivers/riders of said motor vehicle.
The type of data may include any one or a combination of date of accident or incident, time, location, name, date of birth, license number, state, address, telephone numbers, vehicle owner's address, vehicle make - model - registration number - insurance company, accident or incident details including vehicle speed, public attendance, police name and miscellaneous notes.
The data recording means may be carbon copy type paper and adapted to allow one or more copies to be made available to drivers or riders involved.
The number of copies of said data may correspond to the number of drivers/riders involved.
The data recording means may include a data input means which can include a writing instrument. In another aspect the invention provides a method of recording data related to an accident or incident comprising the use of a data recording means as previously described.
In another aspect the invention provides a method of recording information associated with vehicles involved in an accident using a booklet having a plurality of detachable sheets, each sheet having identical spaces for recording the information and each space preceded by text indicating the nature of the information to be recorded in each space, the method comprising the steps of: completing recordal of the information on one sheet by an individual involved in the accident, such that all recorded information is present on all sheets in the plurality of sheets; detaching and distributing another sheet to every other individual involved in the accident for retention by each other individual.

Detailed Description of the Invention
The invention will now be described with respect to one particular preferred embodiment shown in Figures 1 to 3 and with reference to the accompanying Legend.
The invention provides a booklet 1 for recording information and data associated with a motor vehicle accident. The booklet is conveniently dimensioned to fit within the glove box of a motor vehicle and includes a data recording portion 2 having identical spaces for recording input data 3 relating to the motor vehicle accident. The data recording portion is made up of a plurality of detachable sheets 4, each sheet being identical and having carbon copying ability. The input data and data recording portion of the booklet includes spaces on the detachable sheets with each space being preceded by text indicating the nature of the information to be recorded in the space. For example, the text can include the details of driver No. 1 and may include date, time, location, name, date of birth, license number, address, telephone numbers, the owner of the vehicle if not the driver, the owner's address, the car make/model, registration number and insurance company and accident details including the speed of travel at the time, speed of the other vehicle, were police in attendance, was the accident reported to the police, the police officer's name and the police station involved. In this manner, the information recorded on the identical spaces of each sheet will be analogous, such that the same information will be collected for drivers 1, 2, 3, 4 etc, depending on the number of people involved in the accident. In this manner, all recorded information is present on all sheets and the subsequent sheets in the nest of detachable sheets would include carbon copying ability, such that a number of copies of the information will be provided when that information is recorded by the user.
Once the recordal of all the information and details has been executed by the user or users, one sheet of the plurality of sheets can then be detached and retained by each individual involved in the accident. In this manner, each individual will have a record of the entire details recorded for each party involved in the accident.
The booklet most preferably includes the plurality of detachable sheets in foldable form, such that the sheets can be readily folded for inclusion within the confines of the booklet and opened out for use at the time required.
The booklet may also include optional information of use or value at the time of an accident, including emergency services contact details, first aid information etc.
In a particularly preferred embodiment, the booklet may include a writing instrument as an integral part thereof so as to ensure that the user will always have access to a writing instrument enabling them to complete and fill in the booklet.
The booklet of the invention provides a method of recording information associated with vehicles involved in an accident wherein the booklet provides a mechanism and means of reliably recording information on a plurality of detachable sheets, where the method comprises the steps of completing the recordal of the information on one sheet by an individual involved in an accident such that all the recorded information is present on all sheets in the plurality of sheets. The sheets can then be detached and distributed such that the method of the invention provides a reliable and accurate recordal of all the data and details involved in a motor vehicle accident which is then provided to all participants in the accident or incident.
In order to maximise the use and advantages of the invention a sticker or other indicator may be provided for fixing on a vehicle's windscreen near the registration sticker alerting the driver and other witnesses of the availability of the invention in a vehicle. It will be appreciated by persons skilled in the art that numerous variations and/or modifications may be made to the invention as shown in the specific embodiments without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as broadly described. The present embodiments are, therefore, to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive.
