An example method includes receiving a request for media content from a mobile device, determining an identity of at least one of the mobile device or a consumer using the mobile device, comparing the identity to subscription records associated with the distribution of media content to a geographically fixed consumer location; and based on the comparison, determining if the mobile device is authorized to receive the media content.

Description

METHODS AND APPARATUS TO DISTRIBUTE MEDIA CONTENT
FIELD OF THE DISCLOSURE
[0001] The present disclosure relates generally to media systems and, more particularly, to methods and apparatus to distribute media content.
BACKGROUND
[0002] Internet protocol television (IPTV) services provide television media content over a broadband network. In general, an IPTV provider receives media content from media content creators and distributes the media content to consumer locations. The IPTV provider then converts the media content into packetized digital media streams. The packetized digital media streams are distributed to consumer locations via an internet protocol (IP) multicast or an IP unicast. The consumer location includes a consumer device that receives the packetized digital media streams and converts the streams into media content suitable for display on a television. Because the consumer device communicates with the IPTV provider over an IP connection, the consumer device can easily transmit data back to the IPTV provider. In other words, the IPTV provider and the consumer device can engage in two-way communication.
[0003] As media content distribution technologies, like IPTV, have developed, the ability to integrate media content services has increased. In particular, media content creators have begun to provide media content to cellular telephone services for distribution to the subscribers of the cellular phone service.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0009] An example telecommunication system 100 for distributing media content is illustrated in FIG. 1. The example methods and apparatus described herein may be used to distribute media content to a television connected to a media content receiver and to a mobile device (e.g., a device constructed to be carried by a person (e.g., in a pocket, purse, briefcase, on a belt-clip, etc.) during normal day-to-day activities such as a mobile phone, a Blackberry®, a personal digital assistant (PDA), a laptop computer, a desktop computer, a portable media presentation device, a gaming device, a personal media player, a two-way pager, a moving picture experts group (MPEG) layer three (MP3) player, etc.) In the example methods and apparatus, a telecommunication provider manages media content subscriptions for both the television media content receiver and the mobile device. For example, a media content consumer may subscribe to receive media content (e.g., the Home Box Office (HBO) channel) at the consumer's household. If the same consumer attempts to access the media content on a cellular phone, the subscription records associated with the household subscription are queried. After determining that the consumer has already subscribed to receive the media content at their household, the telecommunication system 100 will allow the media content to be presented on the cellular phone. For example, the media content may be the picture-in-picture portion of a media content program. The media content may be provided to the cellular phone with or without a fee in addition to the home subscription fee.
[0010] The example telecommunication system 100 of FIG. 1 includes a consumer location 102, a telecommunication network 104, a wireless telecommunication system 106, and a mobile device 108. The example telecommunication system 100 receives media content from media content distributors and/or creators and transmits the media content to the consumer location 102 and the mobile device 108. [0011] The consumer location 102 may be any geographically fixed location where media content is presented. For example, the consumer location 102 may be a household, a business, etc. The example consumer location 102 comprises a television 110, a network terminal unit (NTU) 112, customer premise equipment (CPE) 1 14, and a personal computer (PC) 116.
[0012] Television 110 displays media content received from the CPE 114. The example television 110 may be any type of television such as, for example, a standard definition television, an enhanced definition television, a high-definition television, a cathode ray tube (CRT) television, a liquid crystal display (LCD) television, a plasma television, a projection television, an organic light emitting diode (OLED) television, a surface-conduction electron-emitter display (SED) television, etc. Alternatively, the television 110 may be any other device that is capable of receiving and presenting media content such as, for example, any type of radio receiver/player, a projector, a monitor, a computer, etc.

Claims

What is claimed is:
1. A method for distributing media content comprising: receiving a request for media content from a mobile device; determining an identity of at least one of the mobile device or a consumer using the mobile device; comparing the identity to subscription records associated with the distribution of media content to a geographically fixed consumer location; and based on the comparison, determining if the mobile device is authorized to receive the media content.
2. A method as defined in claim 1 , further comprising: receiving a request for a list of available media content; and in response to the request, transmitting a list of available media content to the mobile device.
3. A method as defined in claim 1 , further comprising determining if the mobile device is associated with the geographically fixed consumer location.
4. A method as defined in claim 1 , further comprising transmitting the media content to the mobile device if the consumer using the mobile device is authorized to receive the media content at a second device at the geographically fixed consumer location.
5. A method as defined in claim 4, further comprising encrypting the media content prior to transmitting the media content to the mobile device.
6. A method as defined in claim 4, further comprising establishing a license for the media content prior to transmitting the media content to the mobile device.
7. A method as defined in claim 4, wherein the media content transmitted to the first device has a different format than the media content transmitted to the second device.
8. A method as defined in claim 1 , further comprising transmitting a notification to the mobile device if the mobile device is not authorized to receive the media content.
9. A method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the media content is internet protocol television (IPTV) media content.
10. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein the mobile device is at least one of a mobile phone, a personal digital assistant (PDA), a laptop computer, a desktop computer, a portable media presentation device, a gaming device, a personal media player, a two-way pager, or a moving picture experts group (MPEG) layer three (MP3) player.
1 1. A method as defined in claim 1 , wherein determining the identity comprising receiving identification information and comparing the received identification information with stored identification information.
12. A method as defined in claim 1 1, wherein the identification information comprises at least one of a username, a password, a serial number, or a network identifier.
13. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein the mobile device is at least one of a portable device or a handheld device.
14. A method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the mobile device is transported from a first location to a second location by a consumer.
15. A method of distributing internet protocol television (IPTV) media content comprising: receiving subscription IPTV media content from at least one of a content creator or a content distributor; encrypting the subscription IPTV media content; broadcasting the encrypted subscription IPTV media content; receiving a request to validate a license for the encrypted subscription IPTV media content from a mobile device; determining an identity of at least one of the mobile device or a consumer using the mobile device; comparing the identity to subscription records associated with the distribution of subscription IPTV media content to a geographically fixed consumer location; and based on the comparison, determining if the mobile device is authorized to present the subscription IPTV media content.
16. A method as defined in claim 15, further comprising determining if the mobile device is associated with the geographically fixed consumer location.
17. A method as defined in claim 15, further comprising transmitting a message to the mobile device indicating that the mobile device is authorized to present the subscription IPTV media content if the mobile device is authorized to present the subscription IPTV media content.
18. A method as defined in claim 15, wherein determining the identity comprises receiving identification information and comparing the received identification information with stored identification information associated with the subscription records.
19. A method as defined in claim 18, wherein the identification information comprises at least one of a username, a password, a serial number, or a network identifier.
20. A method as defined in claim 15, further comprising transmitting an error to the mobile device if the mobile device is not authorized to receive the subscription IPTV media content.
21. A method as defined in claim 15, wherein the mobile device is at least one of a mobile phone, a personal digital assistant (PDA), a laptop computer, a desktop computer, a portable media presentation device, a gaming device, a personal media player, a two-way pager, or a moving picture experts group (MPEG) layer three (MP3) player.
22. A method as defined in claim 15, wherein the mobile device is at least one of a portable device or a handheld device.
23. A method as defined in claim 15, wherein the mobile device is transported from a first location to a second location by a consumer.
24. An apparatus comprising: a client interface to receive requests from a geographically fixed location and a mobile device; a media content interface to transmit media content to the geographically fixed location and the mobile device; and a billing interface to determine if at least one of the mobile device or a user of the mobile device is associated with the geographically fixed location and to determine if the geographically fixed location is authorized to receive the media content.
25. An apparatus as defined in claim 24, further comprising a stored media interface to retrieve stored media content and transmit the stored media content to the geographically fixed location and the mobile device.
26. An apparatus as defined in claim 25, wherein the stored media interface comprises a video on demand (VOD) server.
27. An apparatus as defined in claim 25, further comprising a media storage to store media content.
28. An apparatus as defined in claim 24, further comprising a billing storage to store subscription information associated with the geographically fixed location.
29. An apparatus as defined in claim 24, wherein the media content interface receives media content from at least one of a media content creator or a media content distributor.
30. An apparatus as defined in claim 24, further comprising a wireless telecommunication system to transmit media content to the mobile device.
31. An apparatus as defined in claim 24, wherein the geographically fixed location is a household or a business.
32. An apparatus as defined in claim 24, wherein the media content is internet protocol television (IPTV) media content.
33. An apparatus as defined in claim 24, wherein the mobile device is at least one of a mobile phone, a personal digital assistant (PDA), a laptop computer, a desktop computer, a portable media presentation device, a gaming device, a personal media player, a two-way pager, or a moving picture experts group (MPEG) layer three (MP3) player.
34. An apparatus as defined in claim 24, wherein the client interface comprises at least one of a D Server, a terminal server, or a client gateway.
35. An apparatus as defined in claim 24, wherein the billing interface comprises at least one of an application server, an OSS/BSS gateway, a domain controller, and a subscriber and system store, an operational support system/business support system (OSS/BSS), a simple network management protocol (SNMP) monitor, or a TV2 management system.
36. An apparatus as defined in claim 24, wherein the media content interface comprises at least one of a live acquisition server or a video on demand (VOD) importer.
37. An article of manufacture storing machine readable instructions which, when executed, cause a machine to: receive a request for media content from a mobile device; determine an identity of at least one of the mobile device or a consumer using the mobile device; compare the identity to subscription records associated with the distribution of media content to a geographically fixed consumer location; and based on the comparison, determining if the mobile device is authorized to receive the media content.
38. An article of manufacture as defined in claim 37, wherein the machine readable instructions further cause a machine to: receive a request for a list of available media content; and in response to the request, transmit a list of available media content to the mobile device.
39. An article of manufacture as defined in claim 37, wherein the machine readable instructions further cause a machine to determine if the mobile device is associated with the geographically fixed consumer location.
40. An article of manufacture as defined in claim 37, wherein the machine readable instructions further cause a machine to transmit the media content to the mobile device if the consumer using the mobile device is authorized to receive the media content at a second device at the geographically fixed consumer location.
41. An article of manufacture as defined in claim 40, wherein the machine readable instructions further cause a machine to encrypt the media content prior to transmitting the media content to the mobile device.
42. An article of manufacture as defined in claim 40, wherein the machine readable instructions further cause a machine to establish a license for the media content prior to transmitting the media content to the mobile device.
43. An article of manufacture as defined in claim 40, wherein the media content transmitted to the first device has a different format than the media content transmitted to the second device.
44. An article of manufacture as defined in claim 37, wherein the machine readable instructions further cause a machine to transmit a notification to the mobile device if the mobile device is not authorized to receive the media content.
45. An article of manufacture as defined in claim 37, wherein the media content is internet protocol television (IPTV) media content.
46. An article of manufacture as defined in claim 37, wherein the mobile device is at least one of a mobile phone, a personal digital assistant (PDA), a laptop computer, a desktop computer, a portable media presentation device, a gaming device, a personal media player, a two-way pager, or a moving picture experts group (MPEG) layer three (MP3) player.
47. An article of manufacture as defined in claim 37, wherein determining the identity comprising receiving identification information and comparing the received identification information with stored identification information.
48. An article of manufacture as defined in claim 47, wherein the identification information comprises at least one of a username, a password, a serial number, or a network identifier.
49. An article of manufacture storing machine readable instructions which, when executed, cause a machine to: receive subscription IPTV media content from at least one of a content creator or a content distributor; encrypt the subscription IPTV media content; broadcast the encrypted subscription IPTV media content; receive a request to validate a license for the encrypted subscription IPTV media content from a mobile device; determine an identity of at least one of the mobile device or a consumer using the mobile device; compare the identity to subscription records associated with the distribution of subscription IPTV media content to a geographically fixed consumer location; and based on the comparison, determine if the mobile device is authorized to present the subscription IPTV media content.
50. An article of manufacture as defined in claim 49, wherein the machine readable instructions further cause a machine to determine if the mobile device is associated with the geographically fixed consumer location.
51. An article of manufacture as defined in claim 49, wherein the machine readable instructions further cause a machine to transmit a message to the mobile device indicating that the mobile device is authorized to present the subscription IPTV media content if the mobile device is authorized to present the subscription IPTV media content.
52. An article of manufacture as defined in claim 49, wherein determining the identity comprises receiving identification information and comparing the received identification information with stored identification information associated with the subscription records.
53. An article of manufacture as defined in claim 52, wherein the identification information comprises at least one of a username, a password, a serial number, or a network identifier.
54. An article of manufacture as defined in claim 49, wherein the machine readable instructions further cause a machine to transmit an error to the mobile device if the mobile device is not authorized to receive the subscription IPTV media content.
55. An article of manufacture as defined in claim 49, wherein the mobile device is at least one of a mobile phone, a personal digital assistant (PDA), a laptop computer, a desktop computer, a portable media presentation device, a gaining device, a personal media player, a two-way pager, or a moving picture experts group (MPEG) layer three (MP3) player.
56. A mobile device comprising: a housing; a processor; a user input device to receive user input; an output device to present media content; a transceiver to communicate with a telecommunications network; and a memory storing identification information identifying at least one of the mobile device or a user of the mobile device, the memory storing machine accessible instructions which, when executed, cause the processor to transmit the identification information to the telecommunications network that provides media content to request access to media content based on a subscription associated with a non-mobile device.
57. A mobile device as defined in claim 56, wherein the non -mobile device is located at a geographically fixed location.
58. A mobile device as defined in claim 57, wherein the geographically fixed location is at least one of a house or a business.
59. A mobile device as defined in claim 56, wherein the housing is for at least one of a mobile phone, a personal digital assistant (PDA), a laptop computer, a desktop computer, a portable media presentation device, a gaming device, a personal media player, a two-way pager, or a moving picture experts group (MPEG) layer three (MP3) player.
60. A mobile device as defined in claim 56, wherein the memory is further to store media content received from the telecommunications network.
61. A system comprising: a mobile device to generate a request for media content, to receive the requested media content, and to present the media content; a wireless communication system associated with an internet protocol television (IPTV) distribution system to: receive the request for media content, combine the request for the media content with identification information associated with the mobile device, transmit the request for media content to the IPTV, and if the mobile device is associated with geographically fixed consumer location, to receive the media content and to transmit the media content to the mobile device.
62. A system as defined in claim 61, wherein the mobile device is at least one of a portable device or a handheld device.
63. A system as defined in claim 61, wherein the wireless communication system is cellular telephone communication system.
64. A system as defined in claim 61, wherein the identification information is at least one of a telephone number, a user identification number, a network identification number, or a password.
65. A system as defined in claim 61, wherein the mobile device is not located at the fixed consumer location.
66. A system as defined in claim 61 , wherein the mobile device is moved from a first location to a second location by a consumer.
