Description

A TRANSLATION DEVICE
Technical Field
[001] The present invention generally relates to a translation device for translating a document from a first language to a second language.
Background Art
[002] When a person is provided with a document having text in a different language to that which the person is able to read, it can be extremely difficult for the person to be able to comprehend the document.
[003] Known methods which the person can attempt to comprehend the document is to obtain either a (1) personal translation, or (2) machine translation. However, (1) a personal translation could take a significant amount of time depending on the number of pages to a document and relies mostly on third party translators, and (2) unless a digital version of the text, such as a word processing document, is available, a machine translation cannot be used to translate the document. Additionally, if non-textual content is contained within the document, such as graphical information, this may cause format faults to any output of the text. Furthermore, if the document is provided in the form of an image file where the text cannot be extracted easily, it can be extremely difficult for the person to comprehend the document.
[004] Therefore, there exists a need for a translation device which is able to translate a document from one language to another.
[005] The reference in this specification to any prior publication (or information derived from it), or to any matter which is known, is not, and should not be taken as an acknowledgment or admission or any form of suggestion that that prior publication (or information derived from it) or known matter forms part of the common general knowledge in the field of endeavour to which this specification relates. In other forms, the data port may allow transfer of output data over a physical medium, such as a network cable or using a wireless medium such as Bluetooth or other known physical and wireless mediums.
[059] In one particular form, the input module 110 in the form of the scanning module is a flatbed and/or document feeder scanner. However, in additional or alternate forms, other scanning devices are also possible including hand held scanning devices.
[060] Referring to Figures 3 and 4, there is shown an alternate example of a translation device 100. In this example, the translation device 100 is provided with a display 190 for the output device. The display 190 is preferably a computer display, such as a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD). The display 190 is protected by a second input module 135 which is moveable between an open and closed position. The opposing side 170 of the second user input module 135 can provide a solid surface which to protect the display 190 when in the closed position. The display 190 and second user input module can be provided in the form of a built-in processing system, such as a laptop computer. The alternate example shown in Figures 3 and 4 are unique in that the display is an integral module of the translation device 100 providing further functionality and ease of use. [061] In an additional or alternate form, the output module 125 may be provided in the form of a printer 165, wherein the printer 165 prints a second document representing the translation data. The printer 165 may be a laser, bubble jet or inkjet printer. The printer 165 may be able to print using colour or black ink. The printer 165 may include a paper receiving arm 200 which can move between an operative and stowed position. As shown in Figure 3, when the paper receiving arm 200 is positioned in the operative position, paper printed by the printer 165 is collected in the paper receiving arm 200. The paper receiving arm 200 includes two portions, wherein a first portion 210 rests on a surface to provide support for the collected paper, and the second portion 220 is angled relative to the first portion such as to easily collect the printed paper.
[062] As can be seen from Figures 3 and 4, the translation device 100 can include a second input module 135 to allow a user to modify the generated second text. The translation module 120 includes a modification module 145 which in response to receiving input from the user using the second user input module 135, modifies the translation data in accordance with the input received by the second input module 135. Generally, the second text data of the translation data can be modified by the modification module. In one form, the modification module 145 may be provided in the form of a word processor 105 application. In additional or alternate form the modification module 145 may include a CAD (Computer Aided Drawing) application wherein graphical data may be modified accordingly.
[063] As previously discussed, the second user input module 135 can move between an open and closed position, wherein when the second user input module 135 is placed in the open position, the second user input module 135 is operable, and when the second user input module 135 is placed in the closed position, the second user input module 135 is inoperable. The translation device 100 may include a sensor to sense movement of the second user input module 135 to the closed position which subsequently causes power to be reduced to at least one of the second user input module 135 and display in order to conserve power. [064] The first user input module 130 and/or the second user input module 135 can be provided in the form of a keyboard. The keyboard may be a typical QWERTY keyboard provided with laptops computers, however, other forms may include touch screen embodiments.
[065] As previously discussed the second user input module 135 may be used to provide input regarding at least one of the first and second languages. However, in an alternate form, the translation module 120 determines, without further user-intervention, the first language. This may include the translation module comparing one or more words or phrases against a plurality of dictionaries to determine the first language. In another alternate form, the determination of the first language may be determined using the optical character recognition module 115.
[066] In one form, the translation device 100 can include a formatting module 140, wherein the formatting module 140 formats the translation data in the form of a word processing file. In some forms the word processing file may be provided in the form of a Microsoft® Word® document. [068] In situations when the document includes graphical content, the translation device 100 can include a graphical extraction module 155 configured to extract the graphical content from the scan data. The control module 105 can be configured to modify the second text data with the graphical content to generate the translation data prior to output. Text contained within graphical content may also be overlayed within the graphical content when the control module 105 modifies the second text data with the extracted graphical content to generate the translation data. Text contained within the graphical content may be extracted, translated, and the translated text may be superimposed upon the graphical content of the translated data.
[069] The graphical extraction module 155 can be configured to determine positional data indicative of a position of the graphical content within the document. The control module 105 is thus configured to modify the second text data with the graphical content according to the positional data to generate the translation data prior to output.

The second text data transferred via the modem may be in the form of an e-mail, electronic file, or data indicative of the translation data.
[081] In an additional or alternate form, the translation device may include a handwriting recognition module. In the event that the document includes handwritten text, the control module passes at least a portion of the image data including the handwritten text, to the handwriting recognition module. The handwriting recognition module analyses the image data, or portion thereof, and generates first text data to be passed to the translation module for translation. In one form, the processor of the control module is configured to automatically detect the presence of the handwritten text on the document.
[082] In an additional or alternate form, the user can operate the translation device 100 by pressing a single button. The memory of the control module of the translation device can include setting data including default settings such that when the user presses a single button, the default settings are used to receive the input, perform the translation and output the translation. Upon pressing the single button, the translation device automatically detects the first language by analysing the scanned text, or portions thereof. Furthermore, the translation device can be configured to include a preset default second language, wherein the translation device is configured to translate the text provided in the first language to the preset default second language. In one form, the user can modify and select the default second language. The translation device includes a docking portion to allow the separable processing device to dock with the translation device. The memory of the translation device includes setting data indicative of particular settings stored by the user. If for example, the user presets the default second language as English, the separable processing device stored setting data in the memory indicative of this setting. The user can then separate the separable processing system from the docking portion and dock the separable processing device with a second translation device configured to have the second language preset as Chinese. The control module is generally configured to use the setting data stored in the memory of the separable processing device rather than the memory of the translation device. In this instance, the different translation device is configured to use English as the default second language unless otherwise specified by the user. Other setting data can also be stored on the memory of the separable processing device, for example a default input device and default output device.
[086] In an additional or alternate form, pairs of translation devices can communicate with each other such that data is transferred between the translation devices in a compatible format.
[087] In an additional or alternate form, the translation device can include an encryption module 149 and a decryption module 148.
