Abstract
This document describes a class of systems for entering characters into a touchscreen device, such as an Apple iPad, an Android tablet, or a mobile phone with a touchsensitive screen. These character entry systems allow the user to enter characters relatively fast using just one hand without needing to look at a keyboard. The user may enter characters with either the left or the right hand, may alternate hands periodically as desired, and on large devices, may even periodically reposition the hand. These systems accomplish this by defining special gestures and identifying the fingers being used to perform the gestures. Because fingers are identified by a "finger mapping" process, these systems can be called "finger-mapped character entry systems."
