Abstract

Systems and methods for recommending advertisement placement based on in network and cross network online activity analysis are disclosed. In one aspect, a method for recommending advertisement placement for an advertiser based on trends identified from activities occurring in or across networks, which can be implemented on a system includes, identifying, from the activities occurring in or across networks, commonly or frequently occurring topics and recommending placement of the advertisement at a timing when the trends or the emerging trends deem it suitable. The statistical attributes for the commonly or frequently occurring topics detected from the activities can be computed to identify trends and emerging trends.

TECHNICAL FIELD
[0002] The disclosed technology relates generally to analysis of messages and associated content in a network or across networks to retrieve useful information, and in particular, useful information to recommend content placement such as advertisement placement.
BACKGROUND
[0003] Through web-based media services like Twitter and Facebook, a user is exposed to a vast amount of messages from hundreds if not thousands of online sources and friends, culminating in massive amounts of information overload. Because the distinctions between each social network are not entirely clear, users feel obligated to juggle different applications and social networks just to keep up and be heard everywhere.
[0004] It would be one thing if all our social messages were part of a single, pars able, filtered stream. But instead, they come from all different directions. The situation is aggravated by social streams that originate in many competing silos. Users or consumers spend nearly as much time hopping between networks as we do meaningfully digesting and engaging the content within. Furthermore, the cross-posting across networks further exacerbates the noise and redundancy of the various networks and services.

[0001] Embodiments of the present disclosure include systems and methods for continuous and real-time or near real-time targeting of social network advertisements and/or other promotional content. The disclosed technology is able to continuously update and optimize the targeting of an ad, or ad campaign, or other promotional content in a social network, based on real-time measurement of trends in a social network.
[0002] Examples of the innovation are described as follows:
[0003] 1. Select a target audience for an ad such as a promoted or featured message in a social network. One example implementation includes selecting a target audience by choosing a set of initial target topics and/or a particular set of the audience defined by demographics, psychographics, interest profiles, influence or engagement levels. For example, if you want to reach the audience interested Americans who are interested in the NFL, you could start with all people in the USA who post about or like NFL.
[0004] 2. Using natural language processing, on all the messages by the target audience (as defined by topics of interest and/or audience characteristics), detect all the topics (nouns, noun phrases, links, usernames, tags, concepts) in messages they post, like, share, reply to, read, or in their search terms.
[0005] 3. Compute the "momentum" of conversation (mass times velocity, where mass can include, or example, the size of the crowd and velocity is the frequency of mentions of a particular topic) for each topic.
[0006] 4. Filter for the topics with interesting momentums (where "interesting" could be high momentums, or momentums that are increasing, momentums that are gaining rapidly, or momentums with trajectories that otherwise look like they will become large in the future, etc.). [0007] 5. Once a set of topics with interesting momentums is found, optionally determine the price to bid on each topic, in one or more social ad networks. Optionally the sentiment of each topic can also be determined to add additional dimensions of data to the topic. If sentiment is included, the sentiment value of a topic can be used to further weight how interesting it is— so high negative or positive sentiment could amplify the value of a topic negatively or positively.
[0008] 6. Automatically target a social ad with topics that have the most interesting
momentums, in order to reach people who are currently paying attention to those topics.
Optionally suggest potential topics to a human for approval before adding them to the ad targeting. Optionally also suggest sets of topics together that reach the best possible audience. Optionally suggest sets of topics together that reach the best possible audience for the least cost, or for some other criteria.
[0009] 7. At some frequency, such as every minute, re-compute and update the targeting for the ad. In this manner the targeting for the ad dynamically follows the trends in attention (interests, conversation, etc.) by the intended audience for the ad. For example, during an NFL game various terms will gain and lose momentum in spikes, as the game plays out. When player X makes a touchdown, topics about that player and the team will trend. Then when player Y is tackled or makes a great play, topics about player y and their team and city will suddenly spike. By detecting these trends in real-time, and dynamically retargeting an ad to follow them, the ad can get more attention (because it appears around every spiking term— it is hyper-relevant). This results in the ad having more chances to get seen and acted on (shared, liked, clicked on, etc.).
[0010] 8. By measuring performance on an advertisement or other promotional content, and feeding that data back into the targeting algorithm, even better targeting optimization can be done. For example, in some cases even though a particular term might be trending it still might not result in high engagement, while another term that is trending to a lesser degree might result in more engagement. Being able to measure the actual engagement for ads with particular targeting enables a better weighting of the relative value of particular terms for targeting. This can be fed back into further targeting calculations and adjustments to the ad targeting. This can be an optimization to the technology.

In addition, it is possible to optimize use of an advertisement budget for a campaign that runs over a period of time of any length, or over several disjoint periods of times, and/or might include more than one ad and/or more than one target audience. The optimization methods mentioned above can continuously and/or in real time/near real time retarget an ad campaign in order to optimize goals for a particular budget, time period(s), and audience(s).

The same technology above can be used to target advertisements or promotional content outside of social networks - for example, conversation, likes, sharing and other actions in social networks or any network of users can be measured to determine the momentum of attention around a target audience, and then that targeting data can be used to target ads to reach that audience on websites or search engines or portals (outside of a social network for example).

Ads or promotional content can be targeting to show up on public timelines, user timelines, topic timelines, search timelines (search results), portal sections, or when viewing messages or external content - or anywhere else ads or promotional content can appear in a social network or community, or communications forum.

By measuring the momentums over time of particular topics, it is possible to predict near-future or future momentum and changes in time dynamics for those topics, and for any topics around them. Given a starting topic x, it is possible to detect all the topics around it with interesting momentums, and then to predict which ones will gain in momentum or continue to maintain high momentum, or decline in momentum in the near-future. One way to do this is simply to compute a momentum vector every n units of time for each topic. Over several units of time a pattern emerges where the momentum vectors connect to form a line in momentum space (a 2D plot of mass times velocity). This line indicates the direction or path of momentum for that topic. It is possible to detect the early signs of emerging topics with interesting momentums this way, as well as to detect changes in the direction of momentum for large trends.

For example, any message or content resulting from or as the basis of activities between users and a network resource (e.g., content provider, networking site, media service provider, online promoter, etc.) can be analyzed for which analytics can be used for various applications including, content/message personalization/customization and filtering, trend/popularity detection (on certain sites (e.g., what's popular on Twitter in the last 2 hours), across all sites or select sets of sites, over a certain time period , in a certain geographical locale (e.g., in the United State), as relating to a certain topic (e.g., what's trending in sports right now), etc.) or a combination of the above. Additional applications include targeted advertising from a user- driven facet, platform-driven facet, timing-facet, delivery-style/presentation-style-facet, advertiser-facet, or any combination of the above.
[0047] In general, the host server 100 operates in real-time or near real-time and is able to generate useful analytics/statistics regarding network or online activity to detect current trends or predict upcoming trends for various applications. Delay time analytics and statistics can also be extracted in any specified timing window. In one embodiment, message/content analytics can also be used in generating unique user interfaces and UI features useful for displaying trends or popular topics/types/people/content in an intuitive manner for navigation, as illustrated and will be further described with reference to the screenshots of FIGs. 11-12.

1. A method for aggregating an online identity of a user from activities at social media sites for targeting content, the method comprising:
determining interests of the user by analyzing user content provided during the activities at the social media sites by identifying concepts from the user content;
creating an interest profile for the user using the concepts;
creating the online identity of the user in part using the interest profile;
overlaying the content to be targeted to the user based on the online identity via a platform independent of the social media sites.
2. The method of claim 1, wherein, the content targeted to user is created via the platform independent of the social media sites.
3. The method of claim 1, wherein, the content targeted to the user is created by a third party.
4. The method of claim 1, wherein, the content targeted to the user is created by a third party advertiser or a third party in partnership with the platform.
5. The method of claim 1, further comprising:
optimizing and updating the online identity of the user in real time or near real time based on activities of the user at the social media sites occurring in real time or near real time;
wherein, the content is targeted further based activities of the user at the social media sites occurring in real time or near real time.
6. The method of claim 1, wherein, the content is targeted based on what the user is sending messages about or what the user is posting or tweeting about.
7. The method of claim 1, wherein, the content is targeted further based on geographical locale of the user.

tracking social relationships of the user in the social media sites; wherein, the online identity is created further in part based on the relationships.

deriving trends for the user based on behavior and the activities at the social media sites;

wherein, statistical attributes for the commonly or frequently occurring topics detected from the activities are computed to identify trends and emerging trends;
recommending placement of the advertisement at a timing when the trends or the emerging trends deem it suitable.
18. The method of claim 17, wherein, the placement of the advertisement is selected at the time when the trends or the emerging trends match or are related to subject of the advertisement or the advertiser.

The method of claim 20, wherein, the messages include one or more of, user profiles, user events, user likes or dislikes, status updates, mentions, feeds, tweets, messages associated links, notes, messages associated with video content, messages associated audio content, messages associated photos, web pages, documents, email messages, comments, chat messages.
22. The method of claim 17, wherein, the advertisement is further user-targeted based on what the user is sending messages about or what the user is posting or tweeting about in real time or near real time on or across the networks.
23. The method of claim 17, wherein, the advertisement is further user- targeted based on what the user is communicating regarding, authoring regarding, browsing/exploring, or reading.
24. The method of claim 17, wherein, the advertisement is further user-targeted based on what the user is presently searching for.
25. The method of claim 17, wherein, the advertisement is further user- targeted based on what the user has searched for in a given time frame.
26. The method of claim 17, wherein, the commonly or frequently occurring topics are identified from the set of messages via natural language processing of the set of messages.
27. A method of using an online identity of a user aggregated from activities at social media sites for targeting content, the method comprising:
optimizing and updating the online identity of the user in real time or near real time based on activities of the user at the social media sites occurring in real time or near real time;
wherein, the content is targeted further based on activities of the user at the social media sites occurring in real time or near real time;
present the content to be targeted to the user based on the online identity via a platform independent of the social media sites.
28. The method of claim 27, wherein, the content is targeted based on what the user is sending messages about or what the user is posting or tweeting about in real time or near real time.
29. A system for aggregating an online identity of a user from activities at social media sites for targeting content, the method comprising:
means for, determining interests of the user by analyzing user content provided during the activities at the social media sites by identifying concepts from the user content;
means for, deriving trends for the user based on behavior and the activities at the social media sites;
means for, creating the online identity of the user in part using the trends derived for the user;
means for, overlaying the content to be targeted to the user based on the online identity via a platform independent of the social media sites.
30. The system of claim 29, further comprising: means for, creating an interest profile for the user using the concepts and the trends identified for the user.
31. The system of claim 29, wherein, the content targeted to user is created via the platform independent of the social media sites.
32. The system of claim 29, wherein, the content targeted to the user is created by a third party.
33. The system of claim 29, further comprising, means for, enriching third party user profiles using the online identify created for the user.
