Among others, one of the prior art disclosures in the technical field of the present invention can be referred to as CN103634675, which discloses a system updating method and a device in an intelligent television. The method comprises the following steps; sending an inquiry request to an updating server by responding to an online update starting operation triggered in an update application program; receiving a reply command sent by the updating server, and judging whether the intelligent television system has updating information or not, wherein, when the reply command comprises a first command, judging that update of first edition information exists, and when reply command comprises a second command, judging that update of second edition information exists; when the reply command is a third command, judging that no update is available; and displaying the judgment result.
The present invention provides a system and a method by which an image display device is operable to instantaneously automatically update smart TV applications whose newer versions are available.
The present invention therefore provides a system and method for updating smart TV applications as provided by the characterizing features defined in Claim 1 or subsequent Claims.
Primary object of the present invention is therefore to provide a system and method by which an image display device effectuates instantaneous automatic update of existing smart TV applications while the user is allowed to use the newer versions without being subjected to transition steps from an old to a newer version of an application or experiencing any service interruption during the transition process.
The present invention proposes an image display device with Internet connectivity so as to access a remote database of TV applications. The user can therefore install as many applications as desired depending on the size of a local memory unit of the image display device. An electronic control unit of the image display device performs instantaneous automatic application update function in the manner that a plurality of applications’ latest versions are automatically downloaded as a second instance of an existing application, the first instance of the latter application remaining usable until the newer version being downloaded is installed as the second instance and therefore the updated application being instantaneously usable.

The newer version is installed as a second instance without uninstalling the existing previous version. The installed second instance is not usable until the older version first instance of the same application is not uninstalled. Therefore, the application, either the older or new versions thereof, remains usable during the transition from the old to the new version; only one instance thereof, that is, a single shortcut is visible to the user.
Accompanying drawings are given solely for the purpose of exemplifying a system and method by which an image display device is operable, whose advantages over prior art were outlined above and will be explained in brief hereinafter.
The drawings are not meant to delimit the scope of protection as identified in the claims nor should they be referred to alone in an effort to interpret the scope identified in said claims without recourse to the technical disclosure in the description of the present invention.
Fig. 1 demonstrates a general diagram according to which the image display device of the invention executes the method of updating smart TV applications according to the present invention.
The present invention proposes an image display device which is operated in a manner that a plurality of smart TV applications in a memory medium of the image display device is managed to be automatically updated prior to uninstallation of the existing previous version. More particularly, the present invention provides that an image display device automatically updates existing smart TV applications without requiring the user to wait for downloading or installation of the newer version as will be delineated hereinafter.
Digital and interactive TV systems provide a comprehensive amount of TV channels and programs while a vast number of smart TV applications offer a versatile and wide range of functions and services such as games, news portals and many other services streaming music or movies on demand, social network applications etc. A smart TV with Internet connectivity typically accesses a remote database of smart TV applications so that a certain number of applications can be installed on the local memory unit of the image display device, typically in the form of a flash memory device. As the installed applications generally require regular update, the user may from time to time encounter a screen message informing that a newer version of an existing application is available, in which case the user is asked to initiate downloading of the newer version and will have to wait for completion of the installation process. As a plurality of applications may often require regular update, this may cause discomfort among users.
According to the present invention, an electronic control unit of the image display device continuously or regularly effectuates checking of whether any new or updated versions of installed smart TV applications exist. In the event that a newer version of an installed smart TV application is available for installation, the electronic control unit automatically installs the newer version as a second instance without uninstalling the existing previous version. When installation of the new version is completed as a separate application in the form of a second instance of the existing application, the older version first instance of the same application is automatically uninstalled. The installed second instance is not usable until the older version first instance of the same application is not uninstalled. During this stage, no information is provided to the user and the user can use the previous version until it is uninstalled and the newer version when it is installed. Therefore, the application, either the older or new versions thereof, remains usable during the transition from the old to the new version; only one instance thereof, that is, a single shortcut is visible to the user.
To this end, the present invention ensures that while an application in installation state is being installed, the older version of the application is preserved. If an uninstalled application is intended to be run, the user will have to automatically start the updated version thereof, thereby using the latest version without being necessarily actively involved in the updating process and waiting for the downloading of and/or installation of the new software.
Therefore, the previous version of the application is removed from the list of installed and available applications only after uninstall, which takes place after installation of the newer version. Therefore, the newer version is automatically downloaded and installed as a separate application which is a cloned application. This second instance of the existing application becomes visible and usable after the previous version is uninstalled and deleted from the list of installed and available applications.
The user is still able to run the previous version of the application as long as the newer version’s downloading process and installation is not completed and the previous version is not uninstalled and removed from the list of available applications.
It is to be noted that the uninstalled application is replaced by a more preferential newer version of the application. To this end, while the latter version is being installed, access to the earlier application being still possible, no breach of user-defined or user-configured application installation choices is in question. According to the invention, the user may manually configure activation or deactivation of the automatic update management function of the image display device according to his will.
According to an alternative embodiment of the present invention, the user may create an exclusion list to specify applications that will not be automatically updated. For instance, the user can specify a certain number of applications whose existing versions are considered more preferential, therefore any automatic update operation of which should be avoided.
In summary, the present invention proposes an image display device receiving a plurality of broadcasting services and having Internet connectivity to access a remote database of TV applications so that a certain number of applications are installed on a local memory unit of the image display device, the image display device further comprising an electronic control unit performing automatic update management function.
In one embodiment of the invention, said electronic control unit of the image display device continuously checks whether any new or updated versions of installed smart TV applications exist and effectuates downloading of installation files of such updated versions of installed applications.
In a further embodiment of the invention, the electronic control unit automatically updates installed smart TV applications prior to uninstallation of existing previous version such that in the event that a newer version of an installed smart TV application is available for installation, the electronic control unit automatically installs the newer version as a separate instance of the same application without uninstalling the existing previous version thereof.
In a further embodiment of the invention, when installation of the new version is completed as a separate application in the form of a second instance of the existing application, the older version first instance of the same application is automatically uninstalled.
In a further embodiment of the invention, the previous version is effectively usable in the manner that the installed second instance is not usable until the older version first instance of the same application is uninstalled.
In a further embodiment of the invention, only one instance of the old or new versions of the application remains usable during the transition from the old to the new version together with an associated single shortcut being visible.
In a further embodiment of the invention, the old version of the application is removed from the list of installed and available applications only after uninstall of the same, which takes place after installation of the newer version.
In a further embodiment of the invention, the old and the new version of the application simultaneously coexist if the previous version is in use.
In a further embodiment of the invention, upon uninstall and deletion of the old version of the application, the new version is renamed and becomes visible and usable.
In a further embodiment of the invention, the automatic update management function of the image display device is manually configurable to be activated or deactivated.
In a further embodiment of the invention, a manually configured exclusion list of applications specifies applications that are excluded from the automatic update management function.
In a further embodiment of the invention, a newer version of an application is automatically downloaded and installed as a separate application and this second instance of the existing application becomes visible and usable after the previous version is uninstalled and deleted from the list of installed and available applications.
In this regard, the present invention advantageously ensures that an image display device is operated in a manner that a plurality of smart TV applications in a memory medium is managed to be automatically updated prior to uninstallation of the existing previous versions and the user is allowed to use the newer versions without being subjected to transition steps from an old to a newer version of an application or experiencing any service interruption during the transition process.
