Kishin Shinoyama solo exhibition
by Tomio Koyama Gallery Tokyo
Location: 8/ ART GALLERY/ Tomio Koyama Gallery
Artist(s): Kishin SHINOYAMA
Date: 24 Oct - 12 Nov 2012

The question of "whether it is art or not" lies within Photography, says Kishin Shinoyama, who has been at the cutting edge of photography from the late 1950's to today and has continued to attract attention. Coinciding with Shinoyama's long awaited first solo exhibition in a museum in Japan, "SHASHIN-RYOKU THE PEOPLE by KISHIN"(ART GALLERY TOKYO OPERA CITY 2012.10.3-12.24), 8/ ART GALLERY/ Tomio Koyama Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition, "Kishin Shinoyama". This exhibition will feature important vintage prints of the "Carmen Maki", "twin" and "Girls of BASARA" series from his 1960's photo book "THE SIXTIES by KISHIN" (2011), which primarily consists of photographs taken in 1969.
1969 was a year of a chaotic mixture of creation and destruction: the Vietnam War, Apolo 11 on the moon, the conflict between students and police at the University of Tokyo's Yasuda Auditorium and the Japanese Red Army incident at the Daibosatsu Pass.
The photographs on view were taken this year, and are invaluable to the survey of the 1960's Tokyo photography.
