A 1968 work by German painter Gerhard Richter has been sold for a record price for a living artist’s work. The photo-painting «Domplatz, Mailand» («Cathedral Square, Milan») was sold for EUR 46.5 million.
Richter, aged 81, was also the holder of the previous record of an auction price for a work of a living artist. In 2012, his «Abstraktes Bild» («Abstract Painting») reached the price of EUR 25 million, BBC reports.
The Cologne-based artist is deemed by many art lovers to be greatest painter alive. «Domplatz, Mailand» portays an urban scenery, painted as if captured in a blurred photograph. Sotheby’s Auction House characterises the work as «a masterpiece of 20th century art» and the peak of Richter’s 1960s photo-painting canon.
The new owner of «Domplatz, Mailand» Don Bryant noted the painting «just knocks me over».
