We all know that Elon Musk is quirky in making bold claims about his ventures, and no wonder some do turn out to be exactly true. His claims regarding his electric car company, Tesla, have mostly been correct. Wait till you hear about the new Tesla Roadster.

A new Roadster is on the horizon

But Musk’s latest announcement about the Tesla Roadster might be his most outrageous yet. He took to X, formerly called Twitter, which he now also owns, to share jaw-dropping updates on developing the long-awaited second generation of the electric supercar.

“Tonight, we radically increased the design goals for the new Tesla Roadster,” Musk wrote. “There will never be another car like this if you could even call it a car.”

Musk revealed that he plans to unveil the final design of the Roadster by the end of 2024 and start shipping the car in 2025, four years later than the original 2020 target. But it’s not a bad thing. The Tesla Cybertruck hit the market late too but it was a well-finished and refined product.

But he assured his fans that the delay was worth it, as the Roadster would be nothing short of amazing engineering and innovation.

Tesla Roadster and Semi unveil

The Roadster, which Musk first teased in 2017 alongside the Tesla Semi, is not a typical sports car. It’s electric and is a four-seater with a removable glass roof, offering comfort and style. But what sets it apart is its performance, which Musk claims will be unmatched by any other production car in history.

Sub one second for 0 to 60 mph?

Well, how fast is the new Roadster? Hold your breaths. Musk says it can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than one second. Yes, you read that right. Less than one second. He revealed it while replying to a tweet about the new Roadster’s 0-60 mph timing targets. The Tesla Model S Plaid can do 0 to 60 mph in 1.9 seconds.

For your rough average perspective, the speed of sound is about 767 mph at sea level. According to Auto Express, the current record holder for a production car’s fastest 0-60 mph time is the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170, which can do in 1.66 seconds. Check it out for yourself.

But wait, there’s more. If you are to revisit Musk’s old tweets, he joked that the Roadster will also feature a “SpaceX option package,” adding ten small rocket thrusters to the car, enhancing its acceleration, top speed, braking, and cornering.

Musk hinted that the rockets could enable the car to fly for short distances, obviously being sarcastic. But a special SpaceX collaboration package could offer more aesthetic and good-to-have features. Time will tell.

Unsurprisingly, Elon Musk’s claims about the awaited Tesla Roadster will have left many people confused and happy. While few Tesla fans are excited about the hypercar, some are worried about its feasibility, safety, and legality.

If only Musk could deliver on his promises. In that case, the Roadster will solidify Tesla’s position as a leader in the automotive industry and potentially revolutionize how we think about electric cars.

Note: The article has been updated to correct a misrepresentation of estimated speed against acceleration.
