Golgotha - Place of the Skull
Golgotha means 'skull' in arabic, so in other words this is the place of the skull...where Jesus was crucified. Located just outside the walls of Jerusalem, golgotha was the place where many criminals were put to death. (Matthew 27:33, Mark 15:22, Luke 23:33 and John 19:17) The Romans typically executed insurrectionists in public places, often by a road near the city gate, where residents would be reminded what fate awaited anyone who dared to challenge Rome's authority.
This place was name 'Skull place' as many people were executed here and therefore it contained many skulls scattered about. The name may have derived from a neighbouring cemetery or be connected withe shape of the ground which may have resembled a skull. According to an early Christian tradition...this was the burial place of Adam's skull.
The two caves in the sheer face look something like the eye sockets of a skull. This rocky hill is north of Damascus Gate, near the Old City Quarter of Jerusalem.
John tells us that Jesus' body was placed in a tomb close to Golgotha (John 19:41). The Church of the Holy Sepulchre marks the traditional site of Golgotha and the tomb of the resurrected christ.
