Abstract
The Mayak Production Association in Russia was the first facility for industrial production of nuclear materials for weapons in the Soviet Union. During the operation of the plant and because of the Kyshtym disaster in 1957 very large amounts of radioactive material were released into the environment. The consequences for the local people and the environment are still perceptible and the subject of numerous studies. This article provides insights into the causes, processes and consequences of the catastrophe. The long-term effects of ionizing radiation, which represents the short-term high doses of a carcinogen, albeit a weak one, is of significant importance for occupational medicine.
