Ne: Patrick is an unconventional detective who is not afraid to break the rules a bit if it means he can get his way. Often mistaken as a psychic for his great mentalist skills, he has admitted that it involves making use of his intuition and making guesses based on his experience with people. He tends to use an experimental approach while dealing with dilemmas, like convincing people that there has been a virus outbreak to see who has had the antidote already (this probably won’t make sense to anyone who hasn’t watched that episode, but it is one of the most striking example of his approach). He excels at finding connections and prefers to look at things from a perspective different from everyone else.

Ti: For every detective working on a case, logical deductive abilities are a necessity. Patrick’s Ti may not be as developed as his Ne but he does heavily rely on it and makes mental maps to solve his cases. He also shows the ability to remain calm and take calculated logical decisions and not rush in the face of adversity. Being the kind of person one would not expect to get easily swayed by emotion, he preferred to find the logical solution to the problems that confronted him. His Ti also enabled him to take calculated risks that would work almost every time; although they do manage to get one person killed per season, still comes as a surprise when they do.

Fe:  Most of Patrick’s theories are based on understanding the motive of his suspects, rather than purely physical facts. As he was not shown to be extremely intelligent, (just good at chess) Patrick’s advantage was his well developed Fe which he would use to manipulate and read other people. He did try to keep his emotions out of his job and not help some convicted criminal escape and murder other people, partly because she helped him get to Red John, but mostly because she exhibited a liking towards him; he didn’t always succeed.

Si: Patrick is someone who learns by experience and applies a lot of inference from his past to every situation. He is rarely seen physically exerting himself. He did hold a series wide grudge towards a particular serial killer, had issues moving on in life, and has had a lot of flashbacks, as consequence of his Si.

Author’s Note: On the argument that he is an Fe dominant, I’d say that his Fe was mostly only displayed in his methods rather than his motives, (there are exceptions, but they’re a bit scarce). This is what you’d expect from an Fe auxiliary or tertiaries, not Fe dominants.

  2. ENTP’s are not like traditional extroverts, and I think this confuses a lot of people.

  3. I would argue strongly that Jane is an introvert. Jane was a showman and does well on TV, but that does not mean that he has to be an extrovert, it just means that he is confident. From what we see in the show Jane is constantly declining social invitations and spends a lot of time alone up in the loft the CBI. Just because someone is charismatic does not mean that they must be an extrovert. It comes down to what recharges/drains your energy and Jane often seems drained by many social interactions with people around him. I would also argue that almost all of his social interactions are in order to get something from someone, rather than enjoying the company of others.

    • I agree. I would also argue that he’s inf Si, since that would mean he has trouble with details, which he clearly doesn’t. The author wrote, “Patrick is someone who learns by experience and applies a lot of inference from his past to every situation.”, which is not true; Patrick always examines a situation on its own, not in relation to a past experience of his. Another thing, “On the argument that he is an Fe dominant, I’d say that his Fe was mostly only displayed in his methods rather than his motives” — this is not the case, either. E.g. when a daughter and mother have issues with each other (after losing the father), Patrick makes sure their relationship gets better, and this has nothing to do with his methods, but his motives.

    • absolutly agree, he is by no means a Extravert. His Gilrfriend yes, she is a Leader of a Group in CBi, also she is the one enjoying conversations you can see it by her Face-expression every time she speaks or appraches somebody. Jane instate do for the PURPOUSE of achiving something, to get something either a respons or reaction, his face-expression is mostly in this moments tense and focused (meaning he is working on it) not enjoying it !

The only time you see Patrick enjoying is when he is with lisban alone or in small group in CBI !!!!

i would also Argue that Patrick Jane is an ENTP (for most its common to oversee same characteristics of an INFP) i can proove why !

Introvert Feeling (mostly he don’t show it, till about several years working with Lisban, he admits only years later that he loves HER !!!! typicly introvert, not only introvert also an INFP (he probably played that scenario, 100.000 times in his head to get close to perfection so she can’t say no !)

Extravert intuition ! Is the superpower of INFP (MENTALIST) superpower. Reading people without EFFORT and Brilliant fresh Mind opend in OMNIDIRECTION, meaning he can imagine all aspects, which makes him a perfect investigator !!!

  4. I remember my oldest brother adored this show; and it’s not surprising–he’s the most ENTP who ever ENTP’d.
