Top talent: Arsenal are eyeing up Federico Marchetti (Picture: Getty)

Arsenal are reportedly considering a move for Lazio goalkeeper Federico Marchetti as manager Arsene Wenger looks to refresh his options between the sticks.

Marchetti is believed to have become the Gunners’ first choice ahead of the summer transfer window, with Wenger said to favour the Italian over Stoke’s Asmir Begovic and Hamburg shot-stopper Rene Adler.

According to Sky Italia, Marchetti’s excellent form for Lazio this term has convinced Arsenal scouts he is the right man to become their new number one, and with the Serie A side keen to raise funds he could be available at a bargain price.

Arsenal were known to hold a serious interest in Marchetti while he was at Cagliari, but Wenger opted to keep faith with Polish duo Wojciech Szczesny and Lukasz Fabianski.

But with Fabianski’s injury problems restricting his involvement and Szczesny falling out of favour over his inconsistency, Arsenal are now looking for a new option.

Marchetti is believed to be worth around £8million and, despite being 30 years old, his good fitness record and top form makes him good value.
