The Texas Cichlid (Herichthys cyanoguttatus) is the only species of cichlid native to North America, although others have since established feral populations. Despite being freshwater fish, they have an extremely high tolerance for salt and are able to thrive in 1.008 specific gravity. At a foot long, adult Texas Cichlids should not be kept in anything less than 75 gallons. For cichlids of their size, they are reasonably well behaved in robust community settings.
