Harem of the Topkapi Palace

  • About the topkapi palace harem

The legendary Harem is one of the most fascinating areas of Topkapi Palace. The entrance to this mysterious world is located on the west side of the Second Courtyard, beneath the Tower of Justice. Only a specific part of the Harem is consistently open to visitors, although the route through it may change due to restoration work.

What is the Harem

What is the Harem?

The Turkish term "Harem" is derived from the Arabic adjective "haram," which signifies everything considered "forbidden, hidden, inviolable, sacred, sanctified," but also "cursed" or "laden with a curse." In English, the closest equivalent to the meaning of the word is the term "taboo". "Haram" thus refers to something marked with a taboo, regardless of whether the tabooed aspect is perceived as positive or negative.

The Harem was the enclosed and guarded residential area of Topkapi Palacewhere the Sultan lived with female family members such as his mother, wives, and underage children. This area of the Seraglio was the inviolable and hidden part of a Sultan's life.

At its greatest extent in the 18th century, the Harem had over 300 rooms, nine bathhouses, two mosques, its own kitchen, dormitories, a school, a hospital, and a laundry.
