Many of our viewers submitted pictures of Tuesday’s severe storms.

The National Weather Service issued warnings for the storm which blew across Bedford, Lynchburg, Campbell, Pittsylvania and Halifax counties.

A highly visible shelf cloud was seen by many. It's referred to as a shelf cloud, outflow or gust front.

The clouds forms from cold air coming down from the top of the storm. The air blows downward and outward, ahead of the heaviest rain.

If you see a cloud with this appearance approaching you, be prepared for strong wind and a temperature drop before the rain.
