Five of the best Michel Gondry videos

Posted

The Chemical Brothers' new clip got us thinking about Gondry again.

This week in the Double J office we were very excited to see The Chemical Brothers release a new clip created by uber director Michel Gondry. The Chemical Brothers love working with Gondry and this one won't disappoint fans of their previous collaborations.

Once again it shows his love of retro stylings. We particularly love the mid century modern architecture. It also shows his continued obsession with repeated movement and intense editing.

So why all the Gondry love? Well, it's clear his talent runs deep. He's made clips since the late '80s and some of those have been some of the most memorable to date. He's got a stable of artists who have called on him to make clips for the last two decades or more (Beck, Björk and Daft Punk to name a few).

He is also one of the rare few to manage the transition seamlessly from making music videos and advertising to film. He brought many of the mind-bending techniques he'd developed in his music video work to the startling Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind. He is also a consummate auteur, bringing an extraordinary perspective to whatever medium he works in.

So with that, let's celebrate some of our favourite Gondry clips.

Daft Punk – 'Around The World'

One of the most iconic of Gondry's music videos. It's got many of his trademarks: his obsession with repeated movement, layering and the body in all its glorious forms. And it's fun. Gondry never takes himself too seriously.

The White Stripes – 'Fell In Love With A Girl'

He's made loads of clips for The White Stripes, but this one portraying them as Lego might be the best. What's not to love?

The Chemical Brothers – 'Let Forever Be'

This one's for anyone who has arrived home from a big night out, settled in to watch Rage, then watched this and wondered “what the hell did I take last night?”  Surrealism overload.

Björk – 'Human Behaviour'

Even though Gondry had been making clips for a few years when he made this in 1993, this was what brought his work to the world's attention. It also marks the beginning of the two's longstanding creative relationship.

Kylie Minogue – 'Come Into My World'

This clip is the definition of a logistical and organisational nightmare. It is a bit like 'Let Forever Be' with the layering and repetition but this is extra special because it stars OUR Kylie.
