Marie and Pierre Curie's studying the radioactivity of minerals containing uranium and thorium; isolated from pitchblend a substance which they named radium, and which they showed to posses an amazing degree of radioactivity. Radium has since proven to be a valuable material in the treatment of certain cancers. The existence of radium was immediately confirmed by Eugene Demarcay, the spectroscopist, whose report folloes immediately after the second Curie paper. Volume is from the famed Wurtz Laborartory in Paris, founded by Adolphus Wurtz, a mentor and colleague of Pierre Curie.
