It-Girl DJ Harley Viera-Newton Shares Her Tricks to Dressing for This Crazy Weather and Shopping on a Budget

The fashion industry's go-to DJ and all-around It Girl Harley Viera-Newton was chillin' on the couch at the bling-filled BaubleBar pop-up shop in Soho last night. Looking effortlessly cool in a vintage-y red cardigan-topped outfit, loads of colorful bib necklaces, and those to-die-for Charlotte Olympia kitty smoking slippers, Harley took a few minutes to chat with me about some very pressing fashion matters. Turns out she's pro umbrella and flats, and she probably shops at some of the same places we do! GLAMOUR: This summer is crazy—one minute it's pouring, the next it's insanely hot. What are your tricks to dressing for weather like this? Harley Viera-Newton: Because you never know when it's going to rain, I actually have been taking umbrellas with me to places, which is crazy, but there have been so many downpours recently. I always have a little sweater in my bag too. You're DJing a lot of parties this summer, I'm sure. What are your go-out uniforms? HVN: I always end up in little vintage dresses. They make up most of my closet, so when I have five seconds to get dressed, they get thrown on. There's a little polka-dot dress I love, a gingham

__GLAMOUR: This summer is crazy—one minute it's pouring, the next it's insanely hot. What are your tricks to dressing for weather like this? ______

__Harley Viera-Newton:__Because you never know when it's going to rain, I actually have been taking umbrellas with me to places, which is crazy, but there have been so many downpours recently. I always have a little sweater in my bag too.

You're DJing a lot of parties this summer, I'm sure. What are your go-out uniforms?

HVN: I always end up in little vintage dresses. They make up most of my closet, so when I have five seconds to get dressed, they get thrown on. There's a little polka-dot dress I love, a gingham dress. They're super wearable—throw on a sweater and I'm relatively good to go.

What's the best shoe to wear while DJing?

HVN: I really try not to wear a crazy heel because you are standing still for so many hours. I tend to wear flats, but a little block heel is doable. Nothing too crazy. Because no one can even see your feet most of the time!

So true! I always see these girls DJing in massive heels.

__HVN:__I respect them—I don't know how they do it, but I respect them.

What are your favorite types of flats for dressy occasions?

HVN: I love a little loafer. That's my favorite.

What about cheapie favorites that are your go-tos?

HVN: My whole closet is weird vintage dresses that I found in dollar bins that I tailor and make my own. But you always find me at Zara and Topshop and all the go-tos. I love all of them. Uniqlo, I think is great.

What's your trick to tailoring those vintage dresses to fit?__

HVN: A lot of times I buy stuff and it'll be super long or too big and you find the right length and take it in at the sleeves. I shop by print and by fabric, and my tailor always says to me, "Can you buy clothes that are your size?" But then we make it fit. It's nice to find someone tucked away who doesn't get frustrated with me when I bring in 10 dresses.

Do you shop at the same places as Harley? Would you try tailoring vintage dresses that don't fit?
