Newport Beach is about to become your new Californian dream destination

Forget Palm Springs, or even LA, Newport Beach is the new black.
Newport Beach is about to be your new Californian dream destination…

When we think of California we think, sun, beach, matcha lattes, yoga pants and LA, of course. But did you know that Newport Beach might be the Californian hidden gem you and your family have been missing out on? I'm an honorary LA girl through and through. The pace of life there is similar to one I'm accustomed at home – in Lisbon. However, Newport Beach, is the suburban quieter and more relaxing older sister to the wild palms of Los Angeles.

This British weather has been nothing short of a disappointment this summer (if we can even call it that), so I understand why you're currently scrambling to book a vacation to escape it, whether is one for ASAP, or for your next summer break. Well, I've just added Newport Beach to my list of places to return to and I think you should too.

I took a short trip to this picturesque Orange County city deep into the ‘May greys’ – a saying used in coastal California to describe the season where you get grey and gloomy mornings due to the marine layer of low altitude that form in the offshore coastal waters – the irony of leaving the British heatwave then, didn't dawn on me, as even on those cloudy days, Newport beach skies were and are still brighter than London's averaged forecast for the whole of August. By lunchtime the sun would pop back out too, so don't get put off by those (which also extend to June gloom), besides is oh-so therapeutic waking up to the ocean breeze.

VEA Newport Beach, A Marriott Resort & Spa

Price: Starting weekday rate: $459 (£385) | Starting weekend rate: $539 (£452)

I stayed at VEA Newport Beach, which truly exceeded my expectations, being equal parts calm and cozy as it was modernly elegant and luxurious. From the lobby, to all the common areas, like the restaurant, the cafe, the outdoor sitting plans, the firepits (very Love Island energy), everything was damn near exquisite.

My room featured breathtaking ocean views, and the design and aesthetic throughout, effortlessly capture the true essence of Newport's coastal charm and its quiet elegance. As soon as I hit the bed, I got back up and furiously searched for the label of the bedding, and that's the only way I'd mark down my stay to be honest.

I need QR codes for the full bedding set – mattress included – it was glorious and I need to take this little slice of heaven and max comfort home. My room also faced the pool area which would light up at night so it was panoramic bliss day and night. The room was spacious, and comfy, with lots of natural light as well as beautiful artificial lighting. Perfect spot for nicely lit up selfies.

The food offering was delicious, breakfast, lunch and dinner with a full menu that could accommodate most palettes. A personal highlight meal being eating our very own roasted marshmallows by the firepit as well as my go-to morning salmon eggs benedict which were out of this world.

The staff were impeccably accommodating, and the hotel amenities were equally as impressive. I made good use of the gym during my stay and it had everything I needed, this of course made early morning workouts that little bit more pleasant, and throughly helped me manage the jet lag. Win-wins all around.

However, VEA is not the only nice hotel offering in Newport Beach. Dependent on budgets, and general needs, here are some other facilities worth checking out if you're planning your trip to the sunny coast of So. Cal:

Balboa Bay Resort

Price: Starting B&B weekday rate: $484 (£387) | Starting weekend rate: $629 (£503)

Looking for an outstanding direct view to Balboa waterfront? Balboa Bay is your spot. Here you will be able to experience the most breathtaking bay views and the most captivating sunsets over Balboa Bay Harbour. There are 159 guest rooms and suites to choose from, for the most laid back and relaxing stay. An impeccable food and drinks menu also awaits, either for sit downs or on the go, boat day trips out.

The resort outdoor pool is also pretty inviting and open year round, complete with poolside cabanas. As for true escapism, how about a 10,000 square-foot spa, and an on sight dry bar salon so you can truly get yourself and loved ones pampered and refreshed? The resort also has a private dock, with the newly introduced Recreation Center which offers rentals for both land and water sports as well as a robust Poolside Cabana program. If you're planning to elope, or hoping for a big family destination, there is also plenty of facilities for that too. Here you will be spoilt for options.

Lido House

Price: Starting weekday rate: $683 (£546) | Starting weekend rate: $875 (£699)

Now Lido House is the epitome of Newport Beach coastal livin'. No detailed was spared and you will feel engulfed in the essence of coastal opulence. Nestled just 500m from Newport Beach, this nautical themed hotel boasts subtle and elegant hints of nautical voyage and sea life. Best believe that you will be awaken with the scent of the salty ocean breeze, as you step onto your private balcony overlooking the picturesque stretch of land. Dreamy.

Each room is truly a canvas of comfort, serenity and marine aesthetic. There are suits, villas and rooms available to book, (including over the Christmas holiday), and things can get decorated accordingly. There you will also find the most beautiful barn-chic wedding venue available for bookings all year round too. Whether you find yourself lounging by the inviting outdoor pool, pedalling on free bikes along the coastline or rejuvenating in the fitness centre, Lido offers you everything you need for the most tranquil coastal getaway.

The Resort at Pelican Hill

Price: Starting weekday rate: $676 (£540) | Starting weekend rate: $931 (£744)

If the giant circular pool with breathtaking golf course and sea side views at the Pelican Hill don't have you scrambling to book in for at least a day trip, I don't know what will. I've never seen anything quite like it, and this resort may be in the higher price point side but your money goes far.

Perfect for friends and family getaway, hen dos, as well as a romantic trip for two and specially ideal for honeymooners. The Resort itself is an architectural masterpiece, with an exquisite Italian Renaissance allure. Every moment spent here feels like an ode to indulgence. The Resort is also set against the backdrop of the prestigious Pelican Hill Golf Course, with the clubhouse adjacent to it.

From spa-style bathrooms to elegantly decorated rooms, each guest accommodation is a sanctuary for comfort and luxury. With Balboa Island and Balboa fun zone a short drive away, and Disneyland at around 35-minutes drive (although, you would think it's miles away as it's peaceful located outside any sort of traffic or chaos), this really is a hot spot in Newport Beach. This is the luxury they've been bragging about.

Crystal Cove State Park

Price: Private room in cottages from $49 (£38.71) p/n | Cottages from ($266) £210.12

Crystal Cove State Park is a special spot. Being there evokes a sense of warmth and heartfelt connection that transcends mere luxury. There, it's not about opulent amenities, but about immersing yourself in the marine life, the environment, and the whispering embrace of nature. The small cottages carry rustic charm, and will allow you to fully embrace the coastal view and the ferocious beach waves – if you're a surfer, or a sea life stan, or both, this your little slice of heaven.

What makes Crystal Cove even more endearing is its commitment to preservation. The Crystal Cove Conservancy, along with California State Parks and Crystal Cove Management Company, form a heartwarming partnership that ensures the park's historic, natural, and cultural treasures remain untouched for generations to come.

The revenue generated from cottage and food service operations isn't merely earmarked for corporate gains; it's invested right back into nurturing the park's essence.

Whether savouring a delightful meal at the Beachcomber (those Beignets will have you spinning), indulging in the nostalgia of a shake from the Shake Shack, creating cherished memories in a charming beach cottage, or perusing souvenirs at The Store, every experience is a gesture of guardianship over this special place. Crystal Cove State Park isn't just an accommodation; it's a sanctuary, a quiet retreat with load waters where you can find solace in the embrace of the sea and be a part of a beautiful cycle of preservation.

Hyatt Regency Newport Beach

Price: Starting weekday rate: $349 (£279) | Starting weekend rate: $419 (£335)

At Hyatt Regency, the gardens alone will steal anybody's heart. In fact, it hosts hundreds of palms and a succulent courtyard that is a nod to the California desert. There are three communal pools (in addition to the private villas ones), three hot tubs and multiple sun terraces with cabanas and lounge chairs. As for sports and leisure, there is also an executive golf course and even a stage for live concerts. Volleyball, table tennis, shuffleboard and tennis courts are also located on site.

Sitting at a more affordable scale than you might expect from Newport Beach, at Hyatt you will also be able to book whole villas as opposed to just a room, with the perfect set up for family or friends getaways. The other bonus is that the place is pet friendly, so it means that if you happen to be travelling with your furry friends and family, they'll be very well treated too.

Things to do:

The beauty of Newport Beach doesn't solely lie on it's sun-kissed charm, or its opulent aesthetics, it has a lot more to offer outside of that actually. For starters you can dive into the ocean's secrets with whale watching by Newport Coastal Adventure, a thrilling journey that unveils majestic marine life up close. Our trip involved 1000+ dolphins swimming along side us for quite sometime, and that alone was absolutely an unbelievable experience. Then, if you like a walk or enjoy a bit of a shop, you can always wander through the idyllic streets of Corona Del Mar. There you will find quaint boutiques and picturesque coastal architecture, plus it's a great spot for gift finding.

Now, if you're more of a serious shopper and would fall more on the fashion is my passion tribe, then Fashion Island is your spot. This is where high-end fashion and exquisite dining merge seamlessly. For a whimsical escape, embark on a tour of Balboa Island that includes a short two minute ferry ride. And if you're ready to captain your adventure, then there are always the Duffy Boats ready for rental. They gave me serious Real Housewives of Newport Beach energy and I kinda loved it. You can book a table scape with charcuterie or bring your own, but either way, you will be able to enjoy the bay, the sun and a lounge day at sea, enjoying a few drinks and snacks with your loved one/ones.

Best places to eat:

Newport Beach isn't just a coastal haven and although it may not be known to be a flavour-fueled odyssey yet, there is a great case to make once you try out the following restaurants. At Tavern House, where portions are as generous as the smiles, I'd say dive into the Maine lobster and langoustine bisque. A+O Restaurant, seated at the Balboa Bay Resort, is more than just a dining spot; you get two in one, breathtaking bay views and perfect family lunches.

For those who swear by steak, A Restaurant is the city's revered temple of prime cuts. As you sink your teeth into one, you'll understand why it has earned the title of the best steakhouse in town. Malibu Farm Lido, a brunch beacon of dreams, dishes out sweet pancakes with strawberries that'll have you watering at the mouth. Bello by Sandro Nardone elevates dining to an art form, giving you a multi-course experience with beverage pairing, in two hours or less, and the chef's table meal is quite literally “chef's kiss.”

The Beachcomber at the Crystal Cove State Park is a must, they sprinkle dreams into their beignets there. As the sun dips below the horizon, JOEY Newport Beach takes the spotlight, offering impeccable vibes and a 10/10 on the food. My meal of choice? The surf & turf steak and prawns with pasta of course, but the vibes don't end there, turning into a hot spot for late night music and vibes. Then there is also Buddha’s Favorite, for all the sushi lovers out there – and you can even dock off a boat straight to this sushi utopia.

Newport Beach might just be one for the books…
