Pros
  • High maximum power output
  • Fast recharge time
  • Features wireless charging
  • Compatible with solar charging
  • Includes LCD display
Cons
  • Could include more ports

According to our Media & Tech Lab pros, Goal Zero is a brand that has historically tested very well for both performance and reliability. While our pros haven’t yet reviewed this latest Sherpa power bank, we tested the more affordable previous iteration and were impressed with Goal Zero’s durable aluminum construction and easy-to-use design. We love that this model is airline-approved so you can travel with it (though always double-check with your airline), and that it supports wireless charging if you want to quickly replenish your phone’s battery.

According to the brand, this power bank can charge a 50Wh laptop twice, a tablet three times and a smartphone eight times. In addition to two USB-A ports, it includes a 60W in/100W out USB-C port for fast charging of larger devices like your laptop as well as a color LCD display so you know how much battery life is remaining. If you’re out camping or hiking and the power bank runs out of battery, you can power it up with a solar charger like the Nomad 20, or it should replenish within two hours via USB-C.

Pros
  • Affordable price
  • Lightweight
  • Includes LED display
Cons
  • Battery capacity could be higher
  • Not compatible with all laptops

This power bank offers great value, portability and enough battery capacity to charge your devices with three output ports. Our pros like that it’s one of the lightest on this list, making it less of a hassle to travel with, though advise that it won’t offer quite as much battery capacity as some of the more powerful power banks and that it doesn't come with extra perks like wireless charging. According to the brand, you should be able to charge an average laptop (except, for instance, the Microsoft Surface Go) to nearly 100% once, and an iPhone 13 Pro Max 2.5 times. Our pros also like that a LED display is included so you know when it’s time to recharge your power bank, which should take roughly two hours.

Anker 747 Power Bank

Pros
  • Compatible with a variety of devices
  • Four ports for simultaneous charging
Cons
  • Doesn’t support wireless charging

No outlet, no problem. Bring this Anker power bank with you while you’re out and about to charge your laptop, Kindle and smartwatch simultaneously. Our pros love that it’s compatible with a wide range of popular devices and has a maximum power output of 87W, which should be enough for the average laptop. We also find it super handy that it features not one, but two USB-C ports for fast charging along with two USB-A ports for other devices. Once you’ve drained the power bank, it should fully recharge in about 2.5 hours, according to the brand, which is slightly longer than most power banks featured on this list. Also, keep in mind that wireless charging is not supported.

Pros
  • Several ports and charging options
  • High maximum power output
  • Lighter than other power banks
  • Includes OLED screen
Cons
  • Battery capacity could be higher
  • Slower recharge time

Offering several ways to charge your laptop, drones, cameras and other devices, this power bank feels like a mini power station. Though we haven’t tested it in the Lab yet, our pros love that it in addition to USB-A, USB-C and DC ports, it has an AC port so you can just plug in your physical charger for a 100W output, though the USB-C should be enough to charge most modern laptops that require up to 60W of power.

Wireless charging is supported, and an OLED screen lets you know the battery’s status. According to the brand, recharging should take under three hours and can be done in one of four ways: AC wall charger, solar charger, car power port or a laptop adapter. We also appreciate that the power bank weighs just over a pound, making it lighter than other power banks, though we do wish it had enough battery capacity to recharge a standard laptop more than once.

  • Can charge multiple devices and appliances simultaneously
  • Extremely quick to recharge (70 minutes)
Cons
  • Heavy and bulky compared to smaller power banks

Heading out on a road trip and need enough power to charge not only your laptop but all your devices? Consider investing in a power station like this one from EcoFlow. It can handle up to 1600W and has a huge battery capacity that's more than enough to charge a 60Wh laptop 10 times. Once the power station runs out of battery, our pros like that it’s easy to recharge in four ways (AC, car, solar and USB-C charging) and should take approximately 70 minutes, according to EcoFlow.

The Ecoflow station definitely packs a punch and has enough to power whatever you need for multiple days,” says one tester. “I used this to work remotely for two days and was easily able to charge a laptop and smartphone multiple times. The different plug options on it are great and allow you to power multiple things at the same time.”

What to look for when shopping for a laptop power bank

line break

✔️ Battery capacity: If you plan on charging your laptop, you’ll need more battery capacity than you'd need to charge a cellphone. This is measured in either milliamp-hours (mAh) or watt-hours (Wh); the higher the number, the more you can expect your power bank to supply power to your device before it needs to be recharged. To charge your laptop, our pros suggest a power bank with at least 20,000mAh or 60Wh.

✔️ Ports: If you want to charge multiple devices at once, look for a power bank that has multiple output ports. USB-C ports are convenient for faster charging while USB-A ports are common and can be used to charge smaller devices simultaneously. An AC outlet is also handy if you need to plug in a device’s respective two-prong or three-prong charger.

✔️ Portability: Some laptop power banks are more compact and easier to transport than others. Always double-check the power bank’s dimensions and weight, especially if you plan on carrying it with you in your backpack all day or traveling with it.

✔️ Power output: Power output indicates how much power (measured in watts) a power bank is able to output. If you’re planning on recharging your laptop with a power bank, the Good Housekeeping Institute’s test engineer Alec Scherma recommends looking for one that has a minimum power output between 45 to 60W, which should suffice to charge most standard laptops like a 13-inch MacBook Air or MacBook Pro. Always verify what your specific laptop requires, and keep in mind that some of the most powerful laptops may pull over 100W. “If you use a much lower output, the power bank may not charge your laptop at all simply because it isn’t able to provide the amount of power that the laptop needs,” says Scherma.
