The skipper accused of multiple manslaughter after the Costa Concordia disaster will be allowed on board the wreck during a court visit.

It will be the first time Francesco Schettino has been on the cruise ship since 32 people lost their lives.

Judge Giovanni Puliatti said he cannot “discuss anything with court officials” during the visit, which is expected to focus on the engine room and bridge.

Schettino is accused of causing a shipwreck and abandoning the liner with more than 300 people on board after it hit rocks and capsized off Giglio, in Italy, in January 2012.

Schettino denies the charges and the trial in Grosseto, Tuscany, is expected to last well into next year.
