This article will be as long as it is comprehensive. Today, I will share a guide on connecting Satellite decoders to the Internet. This tip will work for standalone FTA decoders and decoders manufactured by Pay-TV companies. When I say pay-tv decoders, I mean such decoders by companies like beIN, Multichoice, canal, sky, direct tv, etc.
Similarly, FTA/IKS standalone satellite receivers refer to such decoders as Qsat/cobox/nusky, tigerstar decoders, t-link, hellobox, icone decoders, starsat, Dreambox, enigma, Openbox, cisco and so on. This article is well-researched and the delivery will lay to rest any confusion or worries about why your decoder is not detecting your internet connection. Apart from this, I will give you a comprehensive guide on how to Connect Satellite decoders to the Internet.

Why do you need to connect your Satellite Receiver to the Internet?
Nowadays, most things are digital. People now lean more towards streaming tv programs online than watching them via satellite tv subscription using a dish. Aside from this, you need an internet connection to perform some basic operations on your receiver that could enhance your viewing experience. Initially, many pay-tv operators disabled internet access on their decoders. Today, they have enabled such because they need it to power their streaming services. Multichoice, for example, has DStv catchup, box office, and showmax. Showmax requires a stable internet connection to operate.
Conversely, dongles and FTA decoders have had internet protocols integrated for a long time. For example, strong decoders have had the internet in 4910 for over ten years. T-link, Dreambox, and open box have enabled internet on their products long before strong decoders. Now, this brings us to why we need internet on satellite decoders.
- This is the most important reason for security patches and timely software upgrades. The update can be rolled to devices in real-time if connected to the internet. However, this can be done without the Internet too.
- An internet connection is a must for those looking for decoders that serve as alternatives to Pay-TV(this can be illegal). Especially if you are watching IPTV or iks(cccam channels)
- Also, even with powervu and biss keys auto-roll decoder, you will still need an internet connection to calculate and set new keys.
Basic Internet Protocols/Modems Available for Satellite Decoders And Receivers
We have five internet gateways for any satellite decoders or STBs. One is already becoming obsolete. I will now highlight the list of all the internet protocols you can find in any decoder, including their popularity.
- LAN/Ethernet Connection via an RJ45 Cable. This is the first and the most stable connection any decoder can have. Most decoders come only with this type of connection.
- Wi-Fi/wireless connection to a Wi-Fi hotspot. You can establish this connection by buying a wifi adapter for regular satellite decoders. As for android tv boxes, you can connect to a Wi-Fi network without a wifi adaptor using a hybrid decoder or an android tv box.
- 3G/4G/5G Connections: You can establish this connection by connecting a USB internet dongle to your decoder.
- Edge/Gprs/Gsm/2G Connection. This kind of connection is the slowest, lagging phasing out. To use a 2g on a decoder, connect it via a 2g modem or insert the sim card directly.
- VPN connection: this is not an internet connection on its own. However, you can use a VPN on some android tv boxes to anonymize your activities.
How to Connect Satellite Decoders to the Internet: Works For All Satellite Receivers
This section will teach you how to connect your satellite decoders or Android TVs to the internet. We will be using the four most popular internet protocols as our guide.
How to Connect Satellite Decoders to the Internet via Wireless Connection
The image below is of a decoder connected to the internet via Wi-Fi. Next, I will show you how to connect any decoder via a wireless network to the internet.
Requirements
- Your satellite receiver must support a Wi-Fi connection before you can connect it to the internet via Wi-Fi.
- Secondly, you must have a compatible Wi-Fi adapter ready for your decoder. Note: some decoders support wifi connection directly without the help of a USB Wi-Fi adapter/dongle.
- Finally, get a Wi-Fi hotspot. This could be from your phone’s mobile hotspot or a Wi-Fi/Mi-Fi router.
Step 1
Plug a compatible Wi-FI adapter into the USB port of your decoder.
Step 2
Activate the WiFi hotspot of the device you want to share the internet from
Step 3
Power your television and satellite receiver if the equipment is turned off. Next, press the “Menu” button on your remote, go to Settings/Setup, and select network/config/network settings. Next, choose WiFi network/wireless from the list of internet protocols available on your decoder. See the image below.
Step 4
Next, select Wifi>> enter your WiFi hotspot’s password where applicable and select “Connect Now.”
Step 5
Once the connection is successful, you should receive a pop-up message or a sign on your decoder indicating that. You now have an internet connection on your decoder via WiFi, and you can access all the internet-dependent apps and features on your decoder. Next, we are going to look at connection via LAN.
How to Connect Satellite Decoders to the Internet via LAN Connection
As I said earlier, the most commonly used default internet protocol for decoders is a local area network(LAN). I will teach you how to connect your decoder to the internet via LAN. Meanwhile, you must have properly configured your router(that supports LAN). The image below shows a decoder successfully connected to a LAN network via an RF45 cable.
Requirements
- Your satellite receiver must support and come with a LAN port before you can connect it to the internet via LAN.
- Secondly, you need a router or network switcher with at least one high-speed LAN port. The router could be either 3G or 4G. I will recommend a 4G router, though.
- Finally, and not least importantly, you need to get a LAN cable. This cable is pretty cheap; you can buy it from any computer accessory shop. An example of a LAN cable is in the picture below:
Step 1
Plug the Ethernet/RJ45 cable into one of your router’s “Out” ports.
Step 2
Attach the other end of the cable to the “Ethernet” port on the backside of your satellite decoder.
Step 3
Now, Power on your router, television, and satellite receiver.
Step 4
Press the “Menu” button on your satellite receiver’s remote control, then choose “Setup/settings”. Option and select “Network Setup/network>> network settings and change the connection/link protocol to LAN mode.
If your router opens the DHCP function, your decoder will acquire the IP address automatically, and you will receive a notification confirming this on your screen. See the image below for clarification.
Step 5
Choose “OK” or “Done” once the receiver detects the Internet connection.
Note: make sure your modem has successfully established a network connection with the router before connecting it to your decoder.
How to Connect Satellite Decoders to the Internet via 3G/4G USB Modem/Dongle
Requirements
- First, ensure your satellite receiver supports a 3G/4G/5G USB internet modem. Then you need to get a compatible one. This post will help you get a compatible USB modem for your decoder or Android TV box.
- Once you have your USB modem, make sure your decoder supports it. Don’t buy a 3G/4G modem for a decoder that only supports LAN internet. Next, please set up your modem from within its dashboard on your PC.
Steps to Connect your 3G/4G/5G Dongle to your Decoder.
- First, buy and load the sim within your 3G/4G modem with an appropriate internet data plan.
- Next, connect your 3g/4g modem to any of the USB ports of your decoder.
- Now press “Menu” on your decoder’s remote control and navigate to settings> select network>>network settings. Now choose 3G/4G network as your internet protocol. Immediately after you do this, your decoder will notify you that a USB device has been found.
- In most cases, your decoder may not get an internet connection automatically. When this happens, you must manually enter your internet service provider’s APN parameters.
- Now press a specific button on your decoder’s remote to connect your 3G modem. This button varies with the decoder. it could be yellow, green, red, or blue. The good news is that you will receive a clue as to which button to press on your tv screen. Once the connection is successful, you will receive a success message. Otherwise, you will receive a “No Dongle device found,” as shown below.
Note: If you receive an error even after entering the correct Internet profile settings into your decoder, it simply means you are using an incompatible 3g modem or the sim inside your modem is not Internet-enabled. If the option is available, select auto-connect to instruct your satellite receiver to automatically connect your 3G/4G modem the next time you power it on.
How to Connect a Hybrid Satellite Decoder or an Android Box to the Internet
A hybrid decoder combines the functionalities of an android tv box and a satellite receiver. We have many top-of-the-line hybrid receivers, but they are pretty on the high side regarding cost. Some good examples readily come to mind are Tigerstar T3000 android tv plus satellite tv receiver, Starsat extreme decoders, and icone iron plus decoders.
Connecting a hybrid decoder or an Android IPTV box to the internet is easier than connecting a regular standalone satellite receiver.
The reason is that Android boxes and hybrid decoders share a familiar network interface. Maybe it is because they all run on the Android operating system.
Steps to Connect an Android IPTV Set Top Box or a Hybrid Decoder to the Internet
- Configure the internet modem you wish to use. If you are using a router, preconfigure it on your pc. Alternatively, if you are using a 3g/4g modem, do likewise.
- Next, connect your internet modem or router to your box and power it on. Don’t forget to connect both ends if you are using LAN.
- Once your decoder/STB is on, press the menu on your remote and scroll to the network.
- Here, you will see the list of internet protocols your device supports. Select the one you wish to use and press the corresponding button to connect.
- Enter your WiFi password if you select WiFi, or enter your APN if you choose 3G.
- Once the connection is successful, you can use the internet on your box. See the image below for a successful connection to a wifi hotspot on tigerstar hybrid android tv box.
Tips on How to Configure a WiFi/LAN Router on Your PC or Mac Before Connecting it to Your Decoder
For the full guide, you can read my post here. In most cases, you will need to configure both the 3g/4G modem that you want to use before first use the first time. Now we have several routers, but if I am to recommend, I will recommend standalone routers like Huawei, ZTE, TP-Link azsky G3, hame, and Vodafone wifi routers.
Whichever router you choose, make sure you set it to use just a network at a time instead of it auto-switching.
Also, every router comes with a URL in the form of an IP address which you can open on your pc browser. For example, the link to azsky g3 dashboard is http://192.168.0.1/main.asp(you must connect your azsky g3 router to the computer via a LAN cable before you visit that link in your browser). This IP address is always written on the body of your router. The link to the dashboard of the tp-link router is http://192.168.1.1, and that of the Huawei router is http://192.168.8.1/html/home.html.
Once you open the URL on your browser, it will automatically open the dashboard of the router, where you can customize a lot of settings.
Things you can modify here include: assigning a name to your wifi hotspot, assigning a password to your hotspot, and changing your network mode to either Auto, 4g, 3g only, or 2g only.
The password and user name is most of the time “admin” unless otherwise stated. Please only change those things mentioned above, no more, no less. Once you are done changing, remember to save your changes.
It is worthy of note that any good router can be used for two purposes 1. to serve as a “lan connection(also known as a wired connection) and 2. to serve as a source of wireless connection, also known as wifi hotspot or wifi router. The interface of the azsky G3 wifi router below will give you a clearer picture.
What to change while setting up a Wi-Fi router for use with a Satellite Receiver
- First, connect your router to your PC, mobile browser, or Mac via LAN cable or Wi-FI.
- Next, you must visit the unique URL/IP for your router in your web browser.
- You will see a login page; enter your username and password accordingly. in most cases, the password is “admin.” see below
The picture above depicts a login page that is common to most routers when you are about to access their dashboard on your computer.
- Most routers come with easy to understand interface. You can easily change your router’s name(SSID) from this dashboard. Wifi hotspot password and even your APN
- The above is how you change your wifi password mine is “88888888” Whichever password you choose, it must not be lesser than 8 characters. Make sure you choose a secure and easy-to-remember password.
- Once you are done, save, exit, and reboot your wifi router to effect the changes.

Hello. I’m one of your admirers long before now. I cherish and thank you for all the tutoring on how to connect internet with decoder. I want to share an experience.
I bought a Free to air decoder,D Tech 9900, recently and at point of purchase till some weeks later, i was connecting with internet through USB and 3G and viewing channels before it stopped. Each time the internet was connected with the decoder, and I try scanning through “IPTV”(which is how I have been using it since purchase of decoder),the scanning will stop popping up ‘’Active Code Expired” message. Like I told you earlier,I have the internet access already with the decoder, but this message ends it. Though,I was able to access YouTube on the decoder, but I have been unable to view channels.
Can you help with how to get the active code so I can be able to view channels as before.
Lemmy Morgan says
@Adefioye: the account that came with the decoder is for a limited number of months(min of 3 months and max of 24months). You need to buy a compatible code if you want to continue watching IPTV content on that decoder. https://www.lemmymorgan.com/lemmy-morgan-2022-update/

lemmy says
@apphia, sorry yours is an avatarcam code. Cccam doesn’t come preloaded on qsat decoders. You have to buy a cccam account separately if you want to use it in any compatible decoder. http://www.lemmymorgan.com/dynamics-of-cccam-accounts-card-sharing-know-everything-about-cccam/

good day Mr Lemmy, you are doing a wonderful job, well done. I have been following your post for a while now and your posts are quit easy to understand. but the only aspect i am having confusion is the wifi connectivity, i read your post on that subject what i do not understand is the antenal at the back of Q11G, i thought that is the wifi that came with it,my question is, does it mean that it is not working that we have to buy usb wifi adapter? after the upgrade i tried using my phone hotspot to connect but did not connect? what is your take on this matter? thanks.
lemmy says
@saint GPRS antenna is different from wifi usb adapter. To use a hotspot on your. Decoder, you must buy a wifi adapter separately. Thanks

hi lemmy, i have noticed my cccam account disconnect and connect regularly at the background though it does’nt always freeze the channel but sometimes it does, so pls what could be the reason for this and how to amend it. I’m actually using huawei usb modem with my speed hd. Actually i was thinking of using another server no to enter the same account detail in the same decoder, probably with the possibility that if one server no is disconnected the other would be connected within the same decoder. So i really want to know if it is adviceable to do it?
lemmy says
@hasmo, please change your sim card. That’s the only reasonable thing to do

lemmy morgan says
@Kabirus, please there is no ambiguity about this, your decoder will dictate the internet protocol to be used in a given location. If you move to another location, it maybe possible for you to use a sim card. But as it stands, in your current location, you can only use a 3g modem

I’m a complete ‘idiot’; please help me understand.
… can they solve my ‘probkem’ with connectivity?
lemmy morgan says
@Tizwiz that is you will subscribe to the internet bundle of either MTN Nigeria, etisalat, glo or airtel. Then you will follow the link here on how to use your data bundle to watch satellite tv on qsat or similar decoder. However if you talking about using a decoder to browse the internet free of charge, then it is not possible currently
TizWiz says
Hi Lemmy,
I am an avid fan and reader if your blog; more grease to your elbows.
I have some ‘issues’ and I wonder if you can help me out.
foremost, it is with internet connectivity as regards great band with and service reception. I am often frustrated with the speed and quality of the data services of airtel and MTN. Glo is good but usually unstable. Etisalat is great but expensive. I’ve tried using VPN apps like yourfreedom and droidvpn but they do no help since they too rely on the network providers.
I am curious about this ‘satellite TV to internet’ stuff. could you help me, please?
I use the web for downloads, heavy downloads and streaming; I have a blogging passion to attend to and I sometimes chat online.
at my disposal is a laptop, an Android phone, a space digital satellite antenna (with Strong decoder), a cracked glo modem, and my brains.
what do you think is in this satellite Internet stuff?
lemmy morgan says
@tizwiz no free satellite internet stuffs currently. What we have now is using ypir data bundles to give your decoder internet access
Nchinda Terrence says

I am interested in this post for an SRT-4930L. Thanks.

Eric says
I greet you sir. Please I want a clarification on how Speed HD S1 works pertaining to software upgrades. What happens to the system when there is a software upgrade for avatar cam? Won’t it affect the operations of the Speed cam account? Does that mean that one needs to upgrade the two accounts after an upgrade of the avatar account? Please help me out. It seems a bit confusing. Won’t the the two accounts be conflicting each other during or after upgrade? Thank you. Have blessed day
lemmy morgan says
@eric it’s so obvious you don’t own a speed hd s1 decoder. If you own one, you will know that the interface / protocol for speedcam is different from that of avatarcam. And secondly you will realise that a qsat software cannot be used on speed hd s1. So where is the confusion?
marsh says
LM.thanks for your assistance am now convince your really a genius in the making. Thanks once again for the wireless and wireup issue I have.

Hello sir,my decorder does not respond to Dongle ,what should I do to solve this problem?
Marsh says
LM, I tried wifi connection through my q5 hotspot but it did not work. I know that wireless hotspot connect through one of this channels,Bluetooth or Tethering . And qsat doesn’t have Bluetooth to connect. Don’t you think that’s the problem?
lemmy morgan says
@marsh you need to buy and attach a wifi adapter to your decoder before it can detect a wifi hotspot connection. Pls read in between the lines
sammy says
Please ogah Lemmy,my q 23g keeps freezing all the time, meanwhile I am using mtn latest modem, secondary my q23 does not support IPTV,when ever I try to watch IPTV it doesn’t work.so please does it mean my doesnt suport iptv?it always says failure, please kindly teach me what to do.thank u very much sir.
lemmy morgan says
@sammy maybe mtn is not the strongest in your area. Try another sim card. As for iptv, can you watch YouTube??
Kwadwo says
Tnx Lemmy for your concern but my laptop has only 15 pin serial port, it doesn’t have 9 pin port.
lemmy morgan says
@kwadwo use a desktop computer, not a laptop. Thanks
Rafael udie says
Hi lemmy i have a airtel morden with az sky G1 can it work when i connect it at the usa port am using strong decoder
lemmy morgan says
@raferl azsky dongles doesn’t use 3g modems, they use direct sim card. Only azsky g6 uses 3g modem because it’s has the capability to use a cccam account as well as iptv
papagift says
sir please am planning to buy qsat I have being following ur update sir I av a Glo modem though I crack it so dat it will be compatible with all other sim sir please can it work on qsat wen I bought it since you said 3g is more better for first time activation. thanks
lemmy morgan says
@papagift yes it will work as long as the modem is compatible and the sim inside the modem is internet enabled
paeffiong says
Thanks for this wonderful update.
In my own case, while using airtel 3g with my qsat i had to manually confiqure by adding the following:
country = Nigeria
operator = Airtel
apn = internet.ng.airtel.com
and all other things were added like dial number and the rest.
The same was done for all other operators in Nigeria.
Pls as a matter of urgency, am NOW ready to get the following items from you: azsky G3 router, LAN cable and wifi adapter. Kindly send the cost and mode of delivery to my email; [email protected]
lemmy morgan says
@pa_effiong, it doesn’t work that way, you can’t contact me through my email for business discussion
Kwadwo says
What cable can I use to connect AZSKY g1 super to laptop and where will I get some?
lemmy morgan says
@kwado, use the rs232 cable that came with your azsky Dongle to your desktop computer. You will plug this cable directly into the 9pin serial port of your computer
Famous says
Oga Lemmy thank you for dis wondaful tutorial, pls am not familiar with dat router i only know modem. Pls where can i buy the router if i want to.
lemmy morgan says
@ famous, where they sell satellite accessories
Ismail says
pls mr lemmy , can I also use other cccam account to watch DST* channels with Azsky super g1?
lemmy morgan says
@ismail cccam only works on supported decoders, not on dongles like g1+, g1 super or a+. G6 is a full hd decoder with Dongle capabilities and that is y a cccam works on it
