Are you my mother? Have you read the book by P.D. Eastman - “Are You My Mother”? I loved listening to that book as a child and reading it to my children when they were young. We all have a need to be mothered, to be seen and heard, and to receive unconditional love and support. We yearn to have our physical and emotional needs met, to feel safe and cared for. We need a source of wisdom to guide and inspire us. Hi friends, Happy Monday! How are you, and how is your nervous system? Our world is overstimulating and our emotions under-processed. When we are dysregulated, it means there’s an imbalance within the autonomic nervous system. The autonomic nervous system is divided into two parts: the parasympathetic nervous system, which controls the relaxation response and the sympathetic nervous system, the fight or flight response. When we find ourselves (or our children and loved ones) overreacting or underreacting to life’s situations it’s a cue that we may be dysregulated, which can also manifest as depression, anxiety, insomnia, irritability, chronic pain, GI distress and more. So what can we do? One way to begin to heal and regulate our nervous system is through the power of human touch. Human touch…a hug (even to ourselves), hand squeeze, a massage… these are “bottom up” or “body up” approaches to healing mental and physical health. Massage Therapy stimulates the nervous system by producing hormones (dopamine, serotonin, endorphins) that bring us back to balance. It communicates to the nervous system that we are safe and helps to turn off the “fight or flight” mode and turn on the relaxation response…calming our minds, relieving pain and stress and increasing feelings of happiness. Let's talk about consistency When we (our bodies, minds and nervous systems) experience touch in this way consistently, we actually learn to anticipate this feeling of safety, which makes us feel safe even when we are not on the massage table. Picture being a child and anticipating the warm hug and fresh baked chocolate chip cookies awaiting you at home…it feels warm and safe before you even get there. Let's be honest… We SAY (and truly believe) that we want to take care of ourselves mentally and physically. We genuinely want to do “all the things” that science tells us will stave off stress, dementia, heart disease, cancer and more. We want to look and feel vibrant, of course! But let’s be honest, for many of us (including yours truly), it’s easier SAID than done, and doing “all the things” (like strength training, meditating, detoxing and relaxing the nervous system with massage therapy, eating well, etc.) feels impossible sometimes, or a lot of the time. We are dynamic, complex humans (and for every inner part that wants to meditate there is likely another inner part that wants to answer emails or have a glass of wine :)). I strongly believe that life is a team game, and in order to stay accountable to our highest intentions, support is needed. Not taking care of yourself is expensive. What is the cost? You tell me…. Now, define “taking care of yourself”. This is different for everyone. I like to think about our four pillars of wellness - movement, stillness, connection and nourishment. Some of us need to move more, some of us need to be still, to breathe and meditate more.
