The Kids | Sophie Auster
The daughter of writers Paul Auster and Siri Hustvedt on sitting at the kids' table at the Cannes Film Festival.
I started understanding that this was a strange world to grow up in when I went to the Cannes Film Festival when I was nine, I think. I was at this long, long, long dinner, and I was at the end of the table. And you know no one was talking to me. I was just the kid. And I remember this really handsome, really tall guy walks over. And he sits down next to me and he says, ‘I’m Nick Cassavetes.’ And he goes, ‘How is the most beautiful girl at the festival?’ And I was, like, in love. I think it was this kind of understanding of what it was like to be the kid at these things.
