A herby, scrambling shrub to about 2 m tall with small, asymmetric leaves on reddish stalks and profuse clusters of bell-shaped, pendulous, bright pinkish red flowers. Native only to cloud forests in Colombia, it is found at high elevations between 2800 and 3500 m. The flowers are pollinated by hummingbirds. Begonia umbellata is apparently not in cultivation but would make a valuable ornamental for cool but frost free temperate climates.
