      Critics Consensus

Life is just thrilling, well-acted, and capably filmed enough to overcome an overall inability to add new wrinkles to the trapped-in-space genre.

Blu B Ehh...It's The Blob mixed with Alien. It's half decent overall but it's pretty derivitive and predictable. It follows all the basic beats you'd expect something like this to do if you've ever seen any slasher or any of the films this inspired by than you already know what to expect. The "twist" ending I seen coming a mile away so take that for what it's worth. Another problem is the first 20 minutes is sooooo boring and dragged out. The long take shot is more show off than masterful and because you don't edit it drags it out terribly despite being well framed and all. Also, there isn't much emotion or backstory to any of these characters and there more along the lines of "High Quality" Cannon fodder than your typical slasher. There isn't that much chemistry. However the best moments when this shines is when Calvin attacks the doctor which has really well done tension and suspense that comes out of nowhere after a slog opening. And a couple other times after that it does a great job with suspense but it really has trouble sustaining despite a short runtime especially going into the ending. The backgrounds in this also don't pop and aren't lifeless but boring to look at half the time. The CGI also can be terribly bad at times but there are times it looks great also. There are also times the direction can come as showy and unneeded like the opening scene and pictures of the space station/earth that feel very show off. If your a big fan of any actors in this or are a die hard slasher fan than give this a try. But most people could skip this. It doesn't add anything new or do anything particulary better or as good as the movies it's inspired by. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/02/24 Full Review Roaldo H This movie makes me want to watch a new one so that I forget how bad this one was ! agh Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/20/24 Full Review Bill H The movie was an abysmal attempt to merge Gravity with Alien. It should have been called F A I L instead of L I F E. The person at SONY who green lighted this disaster should be U N E M P L O Y E D. The crew of the International Space Station who supposedly are highly trained, logical professionals, instead act like panicky teenagers. It was like watching a feature long version of the ad where instead of getting in the running car, they decide to hide behind the chain saws. The "biologist" didn't act like any biologist I have ever seen. Instead he acts like the school juvenile delinquent left alone with a lab rat. When the alien doesn't react like he wants, he tortures it with electric shocks pissing it off. Speaking of lab rats, they keep cutting to an image of a lab rat restrained in an unethical manner. When the alien escapes due to the biologist's stupidity, the "highly trained" professionals choose the worst manner of dealing with the alien every time. SONY would have been better off destroying every copy of this mess and pretending it didn't exist. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/11/24 Full Review Samuel D I have been on a Rebecca Ferguson kick lately, so what a better way to continue giving it life by watching Life. What started out as new discovery, and potential for endless possibilities in the realm of science quickly became a living nightmare. Life is a sci-fi film with an ample amount of horror starring Rebecca Ferguson, Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gyllenhaal. This film has some pretty stunning visuals all throughout and the CGI work was pretty top notch in my opinion. Life starts off a bit slow introducing you to each character and laying the foundation to what will be an intense and heart pounding hour and 30 minutes. However, once things pick up, it will leave you holding your breath while also gasping for air. The cast all worked so well together and truly felt like a cohesive unit. At no point did one star outshine the other. As many of you may already know I'm not necessarily a huge horror fan, but I have been trying to dabble a little into the horror genre and this film was a welcomed entry. A little fun fact about this film is that when it first came out many joked around and said that this was a prequel to the Venom films And some even believed that the trailer had footage from the Amazing Spider-Man 2. Lastly, Life definitely taught me that sometimes things are better left undiscovered and unknown. I am going to rate this film a 5 out of 5 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/01/24 Full Review Me D Well acted and keeps you on your toes at all times. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/20/24 Full Review g j It's... derivative of Alien? So? Does that mean we can't ever have a film with dinosaurs in it ever again, since Jurassic Park already did that? Life is a very good sci-fi horror about an alien. Calvin loose in a zero-G environment is one of the scariest movie monsters I've ever seen. J. R. Jones Chicago Reader This sci-fi shocker sticks closely to the Alien playbook, down to the intimately acquainted, flatly characterized crew and the scenes of chaos, panic, and overlapping dialogue. Mar 26, 2020 Full Review Kristen Lopez Culturess It's familiar comfort food for those in need of gory goodness. Nov 20, 2017 Full Review Valerie Complex Affinity Magazine When compared to the cast of Alien, the ISS team isn't well-textured, developed, or likable. Rated: 2/5 Jun 10, 2017 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies I’m sure some of its logic could be picked apart if you’re into that kind of thing, but I enjoyed it as a taut, white-knuckle space thriller that looks great and absolutely nails it’s ending. That’s enough for me. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 23, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Aside from a few nerve-racking moments and, generally, professional production values, the film's derivative quality and deficient innovations create a run-of-the-mill outcome.
