Grey’s Anatomy Is Replacing Dr. Alex Karev With This Shameless Alum (Sort of)

Brace yourselves, fandom — Grey’s Anatomy fave Dr. Alex Karev has been replaced. Before you slip into a full-blown grief spiral, though, let us clarify. Justin Chambers, who plays the OG Grey’s character, isn’t leaving the show. But it doesn’t look like Chambers’ Alex will be getting his old job as Head of Pediatric Surgery at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital back anytime soon. Why? That position will reportedly be filled by someone else, and soon.

According to a Deadline report published on Friday, Shameless alum Richard Flood has been cast in ABC‘s flagship drama in the unenviable role of Alex’s replacement. We say unenviable because, c’mon. There will surely be resistance to someone other than Alex sliding into that role at Grey Sloan, especially considering the circumstances of his firing (along with Meredith Grey and Richard Webber for falsifying an insurance claim to save a little girl’s life). So, Flood’s new character Dr. Cormac Hayes will likely have his work cut out for him when it comes to winning over his peers.

While this news may not immediately please longtime Grey’s fans, it could bring the show new viewers who were fans of Flood as Ford in the eighth and ninth seasons of Shameless. The Irish actor must have impressed Grey’s showrunner Krista Vernoff, who also acted as executive producer on the popular Showtime drama.

Fortunately, Alex will still appear on Grey’s for the foreseeable future (as far as we know), despite having lost his longstanding job at Grey Sloan. At the urging of Richard, he took over as the new chief at Pacific Northwest General Hospital — which, let’s face it, is kind of a hot mess. The hope, naturally, is that Alex and his new hire Richard will be able to turn things around for the beleaguered medical facility.

What will be interesting to see is how Alex handles having another hotshot new doctor roaming the halls of Grey Sloan. Not only will Dr. Cormac Hayes be taking Alex’s old position, but he’ll be working alongside Alex’s wife Jo… and we all know Alex can be a bit of a jealous hothead. And with the hospital battle between Bailey and her former star doctors heating up, the addition of Flood to the cast could mean things are about to get even more interesting on Grey’s.
