CARPOBROTUS acinaciformis

Description

Perennial succulent plant coming from South Africa, but naturalized in many coastal areas of the Mediterranean. It consists of numerous branched and prostrate stems covered with fleshy green leaves, often slightly mowed at triangular section. Large purple flowers bloom plenty from the axil of leaves in late spring. Its botanical name comes from the greek and means "edible fruit"; instead its common name, comes from the custom of the South African ancient people of "Hottentot" which ate the fruits of this plant as if they were figs.

Suggestions

It's also suitable to pot cultivation, but for its hanging habit it is ideal above all for the cultivation in full ground such as in rock gardens, dry stone walls, embankments and sloping areas in general. It's important ensure sandy, poor and well drained soils as well as sunny positions.
