How Poppy Delevingne Takes a Party Dress to the Next Level

No one dresses for a night out quite like Poppy Delevingne. The always chic actress is a regular on best dressed lists, but there’s more to her look than meets the eye. Whether she’s cheering on her sister Cara at Valerian’s Hollywood premiere in a sparkling Zuhair Murad jumpsuit, or turning heads in transparent Balmain at the brand’s Los Angeles boutique opening, Delevingne knows how to make a statement. Filled with pattern, color, and texture, Delevingne’s eclectic wardrobe showcases playful eveningwear that often puts a cheeky twist on familiar trends—who needs a little black dress when you can sport a lacy Chanel mini with matching Maison Michel cat ears?

Up next, Delevingne will appear opposite Colin Firth and Channing Tatum in Kingsman 2: The Golden Circle, which premieres in September. She has also just joined IMG’s roster of superstars, effectively kicking her year into high gear—which means plenty of great looks on the horizon. Here, she shares her fashion guidelines, her go-to British designers, and why she still loves her Met Gala gown.

On forgetting fashion rules.

“[My style is] eclectic, sometimes chaotic. I dress to suit my mood. But at the end of the day, if an item of clothing puts a smile on my face, I’ll wear it. Even if it happens to be a unicorn onesie. To be honest, I don’t really believe in fashion rules. I believe fashion can be whatever you want it to be. It’s endless. But I might have to draw the line at socks and Crocs . . . .”

On her getting-ready process.

“I always try to create a calm atmosphere, but before I know it, there’s loud music playing and endless underwear hanging from lamp shades and picture frames. For me, the key is all about assembling an epic team of people to help you (hair, makeup, styling) and having fun with it. I believe there’s a method to the madness.”

On the designers she loves.

“Alessandro Michele makes my heart burst. Karl Lagerfeld can do no wrong. Miuccia Prada is a genius. And I’m beyond excited for my dear friend Peter Dundas (he designed my wedding dress), who just launched his personal first collection. And then there’s the Brits: Chris Kane, Emilia Wickstead, Alexa Chung, Simone Rocha, Erdem, Mary Katrantzou, all beautiful and brilliant in their very own, unique ways.”

On turning heads at the Met Gala.

“The Marchesa dress that I wore to the Met Ball last year [was one of my favorites]. It was so heavily beaded, I was sure I wouldn’t make it up the stairs. But I did. And I felt gleamy, sparkly, and shiny all night long.”

On dressing to complement her on-screen roles.

“My first film premiere was for King Arthur: Legend of Swords at the beginning of this year, and I would say that I was definitely more refined than I would usually be, mainly because it’s about the movie, not about what I’m wearing.”

On incorporating her beauty obsession into each look.

“I’m a beauty junkie. I have a dressing table at home stacked with lotions and potions. At the moment, I’m in love with Skinceuticals, Dr. Hauschka, Sisley, and Chanel makeup. Charlotte Tilbury does the best lipsticks. And I’ve been wearing Jo Malone’s Red Roses fragrance for about 100 years now—sometimes I can be a creature of habit.”

On her one bit of fail-safe fashion advice.

“Wear the dress, don’t let it wear you.”

On her next chapter.

“For me, it’s really about focusing on what I’m most passionate about at the moment: acting. But not only that, I can’t wait to see what this new adventure will lead to in terms of branding and building new relationships. I’m beyond excited, and it’s like a dream come true.”
