High-speed Internet access – T-Com sells ten millionth dsl device
__________________________________________________________
Broadband internet is part of everyday life. According to a study by the
Arbeitsgemeinschaft Onlineforschung (AGOF) online research working
group, over 42 percent of Internet users go online via a high-speed
Internet access. Whether wireless or not – they all need a DSL device.
T-Com today handed over its ten millionth DSL device to a customer. In
2006 alone, the company marketed 2.5 million modems, routers and
W-LAN devices that T-Com had pooled in the Speedport product group.
It all started in 1999 with the Teledat 300 LAN DSL modem. Today, the
Speedport series is successfully established on the market. Important
quality features include simpler, user-friendly installation and secure, easy
use. T-Com's DSL devices convince the trade press and customers again
and again. The DSL routers Speedport W 700V, W 701V, and W 900V,
for example, were all rated "good" by testers from the trade journal
“connect” (No. 1/2007). In connection with T-Com’s present all-in-one
packages, Speedports ensure easy access to fast Internet connections
and telephony over the fixed network and the Internet.
Fast Internet in the living room is also becoming more and more important
for the future. The Media Receiver T-Home X 300T ensures first-class
entertainment on TV and was rated "good" by the trade journal
SATVISION (No. 02/2007), among others. T-Com's triple-play offer,
T-Home, allows users not only to surf at super-high speed and make low-
cost calls via the Internet – the Media Receiver allows over 130 TV
from the past few days can be called up. It is also possible to have the
pictures shown on the home TV set in incredibly sharp HDTV quality. In
addition to TV reception, the device has functions that allow users to
State-of-the-art terminal devices back T-Com’s claim to innovation
Universal media receiver T-Home X 300T – Multiple distinctions from trade
journal “connect” for T-Com’s cordless telephones and terminal devices for
Internet access – Sinus W 500V combines a DSL modem, WLAN router,
and DECT base station in a single device
____________________________________________________________
Forward-looking technology and attractive design are the hallmarks of
T-Com’s terminal devices. It is with these that the Broadband/Fixed Network
business area is meeting its customers’ exacting requirements concerning
the quality, design, and ease of use of telephone systems, telephones, and
products for Internet communication. By adopting a clearly defined
innovation and quality strategy, T-Com is underlining its claim to providing
significant inspiration as one of the leading providers of terminal equipment
in the German market and remaining a trendsetter with its products and
services.
T-Home X 300T – flexible set-top box
Aside from the modem and the router for the VDSL line, the media receiver
T-Home X 300T is the core of T-Home, T-Com’s triple-play package for
surfing on the Web, telephony, and entertainment on TV. The set-top box
supplies household television sets with varied content such as TV shows
and T-Online’s extensive video-on-demand offering. A hard disk with a
capacity of 80 gigabytes is integrated into the media receiver, enabling over
70 hours of television programs and movies to be recorded. The device has
a time-shift function, which means that users can stop the current program
at any time and continue watching it at a later stage. Users can rewind or
fast-forward the recording as desired. An electronic program magazine
provides an overview of all programs in the coming weeks. The set-top box
T-Home X 300T automatically starts recording the program currently
selected each time the television is switched on. It is therefore possible to
watch a film sequence or exciting moments of a soccer match again. The
picture-in-picture function is another advantage, enabling the user to follow
several TV programs on the screen at the same time. In addition, the media
receiver has analog and digital inputs and outputs for video recorders.
Speedport – control centers for wireless telephony and surfing
T-Com’s terminal devices have received rave reviews in the trade press and
reader’s choice awards time and time again. The quality of Speedports
W 700V, W 701V, and W 900V, for example, convinced testers from the
trade journal “connect” (No. 1/2007), who rated all three devices highly. In
connection with T-Com’s present all-in-one packages, T-Com Speedports
ensure easy access to fast Internet connections and telephony over the
fixed network and the Internet (VoIP, voice over Internet protocol).
The Speedports W 700V and W 701V are WLAN (wireless local area
network) routers with a DSL modem and telephone system. The hardware
can be used on both T-Net and the T-ISDN line. A further advantage is that
customers do not need to purchase any new equipment for Internet
telephony because the Speedport has connections for two analog
telephones. T-Home will become live within T-Com’s triple-play package
with the VDSL modem Speedport 300HS and the set-top-box T-Home
X 300T.
With the new all-in-one unit Speedport W 900V from T-Com, a wireless
network for all applications relating to telephone and Internet can be set up
quickly and easily and without much installation effort required. The
innovative communications center is a WLAN router with a DSL modem and
a telephone system with a digital answering machine. Speedport W 900V is
designed for the use of DSL on an analog T-Net line or T-ISDN. The unit
allows a corded ISDN telephone or an existing ISDN telephone system and
up to six additional DECT Sinus 500i Pack or Sinus 300i Pack mobile
handsets to be registered via the internal S0 interface. Two analog devices
can also be connected. This innovative device enables users to save
money by making phone calls over the Internet with voice over IP. The fast
modem in Speedport W 900V is designed for the current bandwidth DSL
16,000. Several personal computers or notebooks can be connected to the
compact device with WLAN and up to four more PCs with a network cable.
The fast data interchange between the computers in the network is via
WLAN at speeds of up to 54 Mbit/s (megabits per second). A printer or an
external USB hard drive can be connected via a USB interface if necessary.
Sinus W 500V – all-round solution for wireless Internet surfing
and VoIP telephony
Sinus W 500V is a broadband modem with an integrated WLAN router and
DECT base station in a single device. Thanks to the innovative control
center for wireless surfing and telephony, families and small businesses can
quickly and easily set up a cordless network for all telephone and Internet
applications. Sinus W 500V also allows users to call other T-Online
customers over the Internet using voice over IP. The Sinus W 500 V is
designed for the analog T-Net line and provides the option of registering up
to five additional DECT Sinus 500i Pack or Sinus 300i Pack mobile
handsets. What is more, a PC with a network card can be connected by
cable and a notebook by wireless connection to the compact device with a
modern black-and-silver design. The Sinus W 500V’s fast modem supports
the current bandwidth DSL 16,000.
The handset that is part of the package has a large, eight-line, illuminated
graphic display with 4,096 colors (128 x 128 pixels). Using the menu-
controlled user interface, the telephone’s functions can be accessed
intuitively without operating instructions using icons. The built-in telephone
book holds up to 100 phone numbers and names, and the redial list can
store up to 30 entries. The caller list shows up to 30 missed calls. The
handset supports a large number of T-Net functions that make the phone
particularly easy to use. These include call waiting, switching between lines,
CCBS (completion of call to busy subscriber), caller number display,
notification of the call's duration and fixed-network text messaging.
Eumex 800/Eumex 800V – intelligent PABXs for fixed-network and
Internet telephony
“connect” readers chose T-Com’s Eumex 800 as the most popular ISDN
PABX when selecting “Products of the year 2006” (No. 11/2006). This unit
has eight interfaces for analog telephony and two interfaces for ISDN
telephony. Its current successor – the new Eumex 800V – is a combination
of ISDN and DSL telephone systems and can be used for phoning over the
fixed network and also over the Internet. The PABX can be used with two
ISDN or system telephones and up to eight analog terminal devices. A DSL
modem (maximum bandwidth: DSL 16,000) and a router are also
integrated. Users can therefore connect up to four personal computers,
laptops, notebooks, or a WLAN access point for wireless surfing to the
Eumex 800V. The Eumex 800V uses the standard SIP (session initiation
protocol) protocol for low-cost phone calls over the Internet (voice over IP).
Right after registration – for instance with T-Online's Internet telephony
service – the PABX is thus VoIP-capable.
Sinus A 600 – state-of-the-art cordless phone with an answering
machine
The Sinus A 600 came out on top in the tests of cordless telephones with
an answering machine carried out by the trade journal “connect” (No.
12/2006). This state-of-the-art telephone has a large illuminated display with
4,096 colors (128 x 128 pixels). Using the menu-controlled user interface,
the telephone's functions can be accessed and used intuitively without
operating instructions using graphic symbols known as icons. In addition to
a telephone book with space for 150 entries and the handsfree option via
the mobile handset, the Sinus A 600 contains a SIM card reader that is
integrated into the base station. This enables current entries in the SIM card
of a mobile telephone to be easily transferred to the Sinus A 600’s
telephone book. Up to 30 calls can be stored in the telephone’s caller list
and redial list. The handset is set up for text messaging and the sending of
e-mails with intelligent typing. The answering machine, which is integrated
into the base station, provides a recording capacity of 30 minutes and the
option of recording telephone conversations. The messages saved can also
be called up externally using a PIN.
Sinus 900 remote MMS set – elegant design with sophisticated
technology
In the Sinus 900 remote MMS set, T-Com provides a particularly elegant
cordless telephone that has a number of innovative, practical
supplementary functions in addition to easy telephony. The slim, compact
mobile handset of the cordless phone has an especially large illuminated
color display with 64,000 colors and menu icons as well as an illuminated
keyboard. A high-resolution digital camera with 2x zoom and image quality
of 640 x 480 pixels is also integrated into the mobile handset. The
combination of integrated camera and high-resolution display enables MMS
messages to be sent and received in all mobile communications networks.
The fact that through a text message the Sinus 900 remote MMS set can be
requested to take a photo on site and send this by MMS to a mobile
telephone is a particular highlight. In addition, the device has a telephone
book for 250 entries, a handsfree option through the mobile handset, and a
SIM card reader in the base station. The card reader enables telephone
book entries in a mobile phone to be transferred easily and quickly to the
telephone book in the Sinus 900 remote MMS set. The Sinus 900 remote
MMS set enables diverse convenience functions to be used such as call
deflection, CCBS (completion of call to busy subscriber), switching between
lines, and conference calls. The cordless telephone can also be used in an
ISDN PABX.

Security: The purchase of movie licenses may be blocked by PIN
Protecting young
people:
entry. This makes it impossible, for example, for children
to purchase movies without their parents' permission.
What's more, it prevents purchases from being made by
accidental clicking.
Websites from pay TV stations or on-demand services
(TV archive, VoD) of concern for the protection of minors
are blocked in advance by PIN entry. Moreover, sites for
younger age groups (such as 0 or 6-year olds) or even
entire television channels can also be blocked by users
on an individual basis.
Individual VoD offers are protected with an age
verification system. This includes movies with a suitability
rating for young people of 18 years and above, and
erotics offers for adults.
The age verification system ensures that only registered
and authorized users will be able to access this protected
content. Age verification is required by the Jugendschutz-
recht (German Juvenile Protection Act. The T-Online age
verification system was reviewed and approved by the
Commission for the Protection of Minors from Unsuitable
Media Content (KJM).
Individuals of legal age are allowed to register. Regis-
tration is possible online in the T-Online Customer
Center, via a phone call to T-Online Customer Service or
personally in the store (e.g. T-Punkt outlet).
film you want is never out of stock and customers do
not have to leave their homes.
Exclusivity: T-Online Video on Demand users can
sometimes view a film before or at the same time as
its Pay TV Premiere.
If a customer has purchased a 24-hour license for a
film, they can watch it as often as they wish during this
time or select their favorite scenes from the menu.
Before purchasing a usage license, there is not only a
cover text available providing information on the film,
but in many cases also a preview trailer.
An increasing selection of content, currently over 60
of the Video on Demand films for which he is currently
holding a usage license. If the customer has pur-
chased a film and wants to watch it again during the
next 24 hours, he can easily start it from his persona-
lized film overview.
Never forget a film: the “Reserve” function stores your
T-Online age verification system ensures that only regis-
tered and authorized users will be able to access these
protected contents. Age verification is required by the Ju-
gendschutzrecht (German Juvenile Protection Act). The
T-Online age verification system was reviewed and
for telephone communication with a T-DSL line and a volume rate for calls
to the World Wide Web. Call & Surf Basic includes up to 240 free minutes
for fixed-line calls within Germany, a T-DSL 2000 Internet connection, and
an inclusive volume of one gigabyte (GB) for Internet communication.
Starting at EUR 34.95 per month, Call & Surf Basic is the ideal package for
customers who make few telephone calls but want to be reachable at all
times. Call & Surf Basic is also an excellent choice for Internet novices.
Call & Surf Comfort: The convenience package from T-Com for voice and
Internet communication offers everything you need for trouble-free
telephony and surfing – a fast T-DSL 6000 line and a double flat rate for
unlimited telephone calls to T-Com’s fixed network and unlimited Internet
surfing. Call & Surf Comfort starts at EUR 49.95 per month and is the right
choice for those who are looking for full performance and far-reaching cost
control.
Call & Surf Comfort Plus: This top package now provides six convenience
packages in one: a flat rate for Germany-wide phone calls to T-Com’s
network, a flat rate for unlimited Internet usage, high-speed T-DSL 16,000
access, a comprehensive security package, an e-mail package, and the
“fixed-price installation” service package. Call & Surf Comfort Plus is
available from EUR 59.95 per month. The all-in-one package is particularly
interesting for customers who attach importance to maximum performance
and maximum convenience at a set price.
Calltime: The low-cost basic package includes a high-performance
telephone line and up to 240 free minutes for calls to Germany’s fixed
network at a monthly charge from EUR 19.95. The cost of additional calls
remains low as well: With an analog line from the 121st minute – with a
T-ISDN line from the 241st minute – T-Com customers can place calls from
a fixed-line phone at prices from 1.5 cents per minute. The package also
includes low prices for international phone calls: Calls to people outside
Germany can be made from as little as 4.6 cents per minute. Calltime is
therefore the ideal calling plan for anyone who makes few telephone calls.
XXL Local: With XXL Local, T-Com customers can place fixed-line calls to
numbers with the same area code as well as to neighboring networks for
zero cents. This all-in-one package comprising a convenient telephone line
and innovative rate modules is available to T-Com customers for
EUR 25.95 per month. This price includes all calls to the fixed network in
the city area, regardless of when the calls are made and how long they last.
The flat rate offer is therefore particularly suitable for people whose friends
and contacts are mostly living in the extended area and who therefore make
a large number of calls within their own and neighboring networks. XXL
Local’s appeal also lies in its attractive prices for international calls, which
are available from 4.6 cents per minute.
XXL Fulltime: T-Com’s XXL Fulltime all-in-one package allows customers
to make calls to the fixed network at a low fixed rate. For a monthly flat rate
of EUR 35.95, customers can make all their calls in Germany’s fixed
network for zero cents – round the clock and every day of the week. The
low prices for international calls also apply to XXL Fulltime. Telephone calls
beyond Germany’s borders can be made from just 4.6 cents per minute.
The extensive flat rate offer is designed especially for people who have
social contacts all over Germany and wish to have long chats with friends,
acquaintances, or relatives without having to keep one eye on the clock.
Fixed-price installation
For a fixed price of EUR 49.98, T-Com’s technical customer service will
install all hardware and software components reserved, i.e., PCs, PABX, or
WLAN routers. With the Call & Surf Comfort Plus all-in-one package, this
installation service is included in the price. Over 150,000 customers opted
for the fixed-price installation in 2006.

Background information
Download Portals from T-Com – The Load Family
Online sales of legal downloads in the Internet are booming. A recent study
of the industry association BITKOM predicted that download sales of music,
games, software and videos would reach 120 million euros by the end of
2006. That figure would represent growth of about 20 percent over the
previous year. And T-Com, with its download portals Musicload, Gamesload
and Softwareload, is extremely well positioned in this growth market, in
which music is considered to be leading the way in sales of digital content.
That category generated the highest volume of all categories last year,
accounting for 86 percent of all downloads in 2006. Media Control reports
that over 28 million digital music products were sold last year. That figure is
10 million, or 48.16 percent, greater than the corresponding figure for 2005.
This positive trend is expected to continue in 2007: forecasts call for the 30-
million barrier to be broken during the course of the year.
Musicload – The digital record store for everyone
T-Com's Musicload, in business since October 2003, has been thriving with
its music downloads. This is especially noteworthy in light of the special
factors governing the success or failure of virtual shops in the Internet,
where the competition is never more than a few mouse clicks away. Internet
customers don't base their purchase decisions solely on price – they also
give plenty of attention to service and convenience. In a word, the key
criterion is "usability" – i.e. user-friendliness. Ideally, customers should find
broad functionality combined with ease and simplicity of use. As the Stiftung
Warentest product / services testing institute reported in 2006, Musicload
already fulfills the criteria for ideal shops. In fact, the institute found
Musicload to be the best in its class. Currently, Musicload's Internet
presence is being revamped. When this process has been completed, the
new-and-improved Musicload will boast a number of integrated new
features, including Musicload Nonstop, a subscription-based streaming
service that was launched in September 2006; new music-video downloads;
audio books; and expanded classical and jazz sections. In spite of the
additional content, the main emphasis of the revamping is on functionality,
however. For example, the new functionality will provide the sort of detailed
added information that jazz and classical listeners value, such as names of
contributing artists. The new Musicload site will thus provide a range of
additional information. At the same time, the site's basic look and feel,
which has been well received, will remain largely unchanged. Soon, "do
your own playlist" music TV for PCs will become available. Musicload has
been offering music videos since December 2006. Along with nearly 2
million songs, the site now offers downloads of over 1000 clips with national
and international recording artists – including top stars such as Madonna,
James Blunt, Red Hot Chili Peppers, REM, and many more.
Gamesload – digital shopping for games
Exciting developments are taking place in the PC-games market, for which
experts are predicting a great future. This is another area in which the
Internet is increasingly becoming a mainstream distribution channel. More
and more, avid gamers are buying their games not in computer stores, but
in the Internet, via download to their PCs. Two legal options for such
downloads are available: a) one-time purchases of complete PC games, for
download to the user's PC; b) term-limited license purchases, via a games-
on-demand service, for online play of games throughout a license period.
T-Com became one of the first major games providers in August 2005,
when the company launched Gamesload, a digital shop for full versions of
PC games. From the shop, users can download a large number of new and
classic games – about 480 at present – and try them out for a limited period
before (perhaps) buying them. The games are encrypted; once a test phase
has expired, the user has to purchase an activation key if he or she opts for
continued play. Gamesload's range of products includes online games,
which are played in the network, with no download and installation required,
and an on-demand service, which offers online, for-pay playing of full
versions of German-language PC games.
Digital distribution is also opening up new opportunities for publishers. For
example, because storage capacity is not a problem, publishers can now
easily stock games even for very specialized customer groups (e.g.
simulation games or special high-end versions). Yet another plus for
Internet sales: vendors do not have to return unsold stocks, and that lowers
costs. What is more, the Internet is reaching new user segments. For
example, games sites have been attracting more and more Internet surfers
who do not consider themselves avid gamers. Market researchers thus see
an important future market in the electronic distribution of PC games.
According to the market-research institute Jupiter Research, revenue
generated in Germany with games downloads and games on demand
increased fivefold, to ten million euros, from 2003 to 2005. And Jupiter
Research forecasts dramatic further growth for the German market, to 73.7
million euros 2 , by 2009.
Softwareload – Software with a download guarantee
In November 2006, T-Com launched Softwareload, its own online-sales
platform for software. For its software sales, Softwareload uses the same
logic Gamesload applies to PC games sales: the point of sale should be the
point of use – namely, the user's PC. There should be no media
discontinuties. The advantage for the customer: being able to get and use
products very quickly. Currently, Softwareload offers more than 17,000
software items, including many full versions from leading companies and
freeware and shareware. Many programs are available on a "try before you
buy" test basis. A total of nine product categories are offered, including
office & finances, multimedia, security and tuning.
One of Softwareload's special features is a download guarantee: for each
program a registered customer downloads, Softwareload automatically
saves a personal back-up copy for the customer. Back-up copies are kept in
a password-protected download center and remain available for unlimited
download as necessary throughout a two-year period. In addition to
protecting against unintended deletion, this simplifies the installation
process for customers who upgrade to new new computers.
The shop's navigation and user-assistance tools include a powerful search
function, a linked list of top downloads, test reports from industry
publications and product evaluations submitted by other Softwareload
users. The shop also offers workshops, with step-by-step instructions, for a
range of different programs. For technical support, the site offers email
support and a low-cost telephone hot line that is available 24/7.
Online-gaming platform
In the online-gaming platform area, users can play the
above-mentioned games against other players, on a
tournament basis. To use this area, a user creates a
Gamesload account and gives himself a nickname. He
also chooses an avatar – a virtual representative – in
the online-gaming platform, as well as a set of clothes
and accessories for his avatar. A user's avatar receives
the user's nickname. Users pay for virtual clothes and
accessories with coins that they "earn" by playing and
winning tournaments. Users can invite friends to join
them in the online-gaming-platform area, and they can
challenge other users to matches, via email. In a VIP
area, which is subject to special charges, registered
users play special VIP games, before an audience of
other users, and can take part in exclusive
tournaments. Users obtain access to the VIP area by
purchasing time allotments from Gamesload.
