Utrecht 2017. Gb. 189 pp. Met afb. in kleur. Zeer nette staat.

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. DECORATED MEDIEVAL MANUSCRIPT IN LATIN AND ITALIAN ON PARCHMENT AND PAPER, Central or Southern Italy (Lanciano?), c. 1450-1475. 135 x 90 mm. 109 folios preceded and followed by single flyleaves, watermark in Piccard, complete (collation, i-vii10 viii5 [of 10; five leaves canceled with no loss of text] ix-x12 xi10), chiefly written in five semitextualis or hybrida hands on 26-31 lines, two hands on long lines and three in two columns (justification, 95 x 65-70 mm.), red rubrics and underlining, 2- to 4-line red initials, 4- to 5-line initials in blue and red, three 7-line initials in blue and red (ff. B 1, 1v, 5). BINDING: Late fifteenth-century Italian blind-stamped brown leather over wooden boards, sewn on three cords with remnants of blue endbands, clasps removed, remnant of upper clasp on front fore-edge visible, parchment pastedowns, originally blank. TEXT: This small-format Franciscan miscellany is an example of a mendicant pocket-book, designed for easy portability. This one is still preserved in a very early, possibly contemporary binding. Its contents include an excerpt from Bartolomeus de Rinonico's De conformitate vitae beati Francisci, an indispensable source on the first 150 years of the history of the Franciscan Order that draws heavily on Franciscan writings of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries to demonstrate the exact conformity of the life of Saint Francis (and, by implication, of the friars in the Order) to the life of Christ. The excerpt of Imitatio Christi found here is evidence of the dissemination of this important text into Italy and its readership by Franciscans. The Italian translation of a text on the Mass, known in only one other manuscript, and the text on the Divine Office at Septuagesima, perhaps unique to this manuscript, are of particular importance and the miscellany warrants further study for its unusual contents. PROVENANCE: Written in the third quarter of the fifteenth century in Central Italy, as suggested by the evidence of the script, watermarks, binding, and early provenance. Belonged to the Franciscan friary of Lanciano, in the province of Chieti in Southern Italy, the bequest of a brother Thomas of Lanciano, as indicated by a contemporary inscription on the rear flyleaf, verso. The presence of multiple hands in the manuscript suggests that it was the product of a scriptorium. Given this and the Italian aspect of all the hands, it is possible this book originated at the friary in Lanciano. CONDITION: Binding somewhat damaged by woodworm, text worn on ff. B 1v and 12, but otherwise in good condition. Full description and photographs available (TM 770).

2 SS. Qu.-8vo. Mit eh. adr. Kuvert. [11]; [21] [2 blank] pp.The first and only incunable edition of this theological work, printed by the first printer of Augsburg, Günther Zainer (?-1478). He started his printing career in Augsburg in 1468 and is known to have been one of the printers at the new printing shop in the Augsburg Saint Ulrich and Saint Afra's Abbey. He probably learned the trade from Johannes Mentelin (ca. 1410-1478) in Strasbourg. Zainer's paper, presswork and typefaces are all of high quality and about 80 books are known to have been printed by him.The De essentia divinitatis, the first tract in this collection, was thought to have been written by Saint Jerome, but it is actually the first chapter of Formulae spiritualis intelligentiae by Saint Eucherius of Lyon (ca. 380-ca. 449). In the present edition, this tract is printed together with Aquinas' De articulis fidei; the second tract starts on the leaf on which the first one ends. These works are part of a larger collection of separately published tracts, which includes Imitatio Christi by Thomas à Kempis, Soliloquia by Saint Augustine and Dispositorium moriendi by Johannes Nider. Nearly each tract was sold independently, so every collection differs in composition and number (varying from 1 to 11) of tracts. With the bookplate of Bernd Pattloch mounted on the front pastedown and a manicule in the margin of page [14] of Aquinas's tract and some manuscript annotations in the margins of several leaves. The spine is slightly rubbed, and the blue edges are mostly faded. The gutters of the first and last leaves (excluding the modern endpapers) show remnants of earlier blue paper wrappers. With a water stain in the lower corner throughout, and a water stain in the outer margin in the second half of the work, both without affecting the text. With a repair in the blank foot margin on the final leaf of the text and in the outer margin of the last blank leaf. Trace of a bookplate on the front pastedown) (Note: Johannes Latomus (Bergizomius) was born in the Dutch city Bergen op Zoom in 1520, he died in Antwerp in 1578 in the 'Falconsklooster'. He was a son of Jacob Steenhauwers and Margaretha Vordeels, and made his profession in the Augustine monastery 'Marientroon' near Grobbendonk in the region of Herenthals, was appointed abbot (Coenobiarcha) of the priory of Corsendonk in 1551. He not only was a wise and amiable man, and a prudent administrator, but he was also considered an excellent poet, a conscientious historian and a great scholar. He saved the autograph of the 'Imitatio Christi' of Thomas a Kempis from oblivion. His best known work 'Corsendonca' describes the history of the former Augustine priory of Corsendonk, south of Turnhout. (NNBW 2,787/88) The priory was part of the chapter of Windesheim, and was founded in 1395 by Maria of Gelre, also known as Maria of Brabant, daughter of Duke Jan III of Brabant. The monastery was closed down by the emperor Joseph II in 1785; the closing became definitive in 1795. (See Wikipedia 'Corsendonk (Priorij) The history of Corsendonk, continued after Latomus' death by prior Hoybergius till 1642, fills the first 38 pages of the book. The rest consists of Hoybergius' notes. The priory was in the 17th and 18th century known for its scriptorium and Latin tuition. § Johannes Latomus was also an excellent Neolatin poet. Hofman Peerlkamp praises his poetry for its elegance: 'Carmina certe, quibus Elogia Joviani ornavit, elegantia, amoenitate, et acumine plerumque excellunt. Nec deest nitor et facilitas orationis'. (Hofman Peerlkamp, 'Liber de vita doctrina et facultate Nederlandicorum qui carmina latina composuerunt', Haarlem 1888, p. 118/19) § The 'Corsendonca' of Johannes Latomus Bergizomius is in ADB (Algemeine Deutsch Biographie, vol.18, p. 4) erroneously attributed to his namesake and contemporary, the German historian and theologian Johannes Latomus, 1524-1600, deacon of the Frankfurter 'Chorherrenstift St. Bartholomäi'. He wrote about the history of Frankfurt) (Provenance: On the front flyleaf: 'L. Mostelmans') (Collation: *8, A-N8) (Photographs on request) 500 gr.

Oktober." Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu.
