Converting a 6R15 to a DAY/DATE movement

Update 28/2/2021

Added 6r15c , some reported to have missing stud for the intermediate wheel for day correction !

——————————————–

OK, some of you guys liked the more expensive 6R15 (NE15) movement for its extra engraving and longer power reserve.

Question – Many has asked whether the 6R15 can be converted into a DAY/DATE movement for the SKX007 Supercharge usage.

Answer – 6R15 can be converted to a DAY/DATE movement and it can also be used for the swap in the SKX007 Supercharge article.

Here is the differences in terms of accuracy when compared with a NH35 or 36 :

6R15 – 50 hours power reserve (SPRON510 mainspring).
NH35 – 40 hours power reserve (SPRON110 mainspring).

Those who had asked, the conversion to a DAY/DATE is the same procedure as below :

Hands-on DIY SKX to NH36 upgrade !

Supercharge your SKX007 with a NH35/36

The only extra steps are :
(i will be using current available pix. Ignore the colour of the day/date wheel disc)

DAY wheel removal (swap to the 6R15 for proper 4pm crown alignment).

Seiko DAY wheel Snap C-clip

The 6R15 being a DATE only movement, it has NO intermediate DAY correction wheel (the white plastic gear). Therefore transfer this to the 6R15 too.

Remove the intermediate day correction wheel (Transfer to the 6R15)

Seiko DAY-DATE corrector and setting wheel

Because the 6R15 is a DATE only movement, its hour wheel is different. You will needs to swap the hour wheel.

Swapping the Hour wheel.

Remove the 4 screws

Remove the plate

Remove the DAY/DATE setting wheel

Remove jumper plate

Remove date wheel

Swapping the Hour wheel

Reverse the procedure for re-installation, and you will have a DAY/DATE 6R15 movement !

* Not discussing or taking price differential between both movement <6R15 vs 4R35 or NE15 vs NH35>. (For you the find out !)

Hope you enjoy this article.

Update

The 6R15 has 3 versions. Namely A, B and C.

It has been reported that some version C does not come with a stud for the intermediate wheel for day correction (see pic below).

This complicated the conversion !

28/2/2021 – Added confirmation that the new 6R15 verse C does not comes with stud for the intermediate wheel for day correction !

You have been told !

On the 6r15 movement, thank you for help, just made it a day/date, the is a stem missing on the 6r15 movement for the intermediate wheel for day correction ( as date model doesn’t need it, so pulled the stem out of a broken 7s26, sanded it, so it would fit back easier. now have quick set day/date.

. The old NE15b, 6r15c movements are now discontinued for the NE15c, 6r15d. There is a difference now between them now, which involves a lot more work when converting them to accept a day disk as there is no day corrector wheel stud!!

      1. Thank you for the information.

  3. Would be nice to know the details and efforts to convert to day/date function of the latest NE15c, 6r15d. Pictures for sure may help as well!

    1. Haven’t had the opportunity to work on the 6r15d.
      Looking forward.

      1. Good to know.

  4. Just complete another 6r15d to day/date, all went ok as before tiny stem to pull out of old movement and replace in 6ri5d.
    redards Ric

    1. Good work ! 👍

    2. Again, well done !

  5. Can you use the NH36A parts on the 6R15D for the day/date swap?

    1. What parts ?
      The Day wheel is interchangeable.
      The Date wheel is not.

      1. I have the 6R15D movement and would like it to display the day as well. I am just wondering which parts I need to complete this taste. I appreciate your post/instructions on this day/date conversion for the 6R15D.

Hello, thank you for your hard work. I was wondering if you could please give me some guidance. I’m building a Seiko SRP turtle from scratch, and have a 6R15 movement on it’s way. I’m having a hard time locating the hour wheel 0271 483, the intermediate day correction wheel 0989 070 I know you sell. And I have already purchsed the day/date corrector setting wheel 0737 300. If I purchased a NH36 movement, are the hour wheel/intermediate day correction wheel/day/date corrector steering wheel the correct parts I need to make the 6R15 into a day/date movement? I have also purchased the following, Seiko Day Wheel Black English/Kanji 0160 298 and Seiko Date Wheel Black 0878 207. Thank you for your time. Best regards, Kevin

    1. Hi

Best is to use the existing 7sXX or 4Rxx hr wheel. It can be swap with the 6R15.

      1. Kevin Tan · ·

Thank you for your reply, problem is I do not have an existing movement to take apart. I’m literally building this time piece from scratch. With a NH36, would those internal parts work to swap into the 6R15?

      2. The NH36 hr wheel is a bit taller than the 6R.

The hour wheel part no. 0271 483, specific to the 7S26 only? The 4RXX, NHXX are they different? I would need to swap out the 6R hour wheel in order to have day/date function. I’m just wondering if the three parts you had written about in your post. The hour wheel 0271 483, the intermediate day correction wheel 0989 070, and the day/date corrector setting wheel 0737 300, can all 3 of these parts be found in the NH36, 7S26, 4R36, are they all the same?

    1. The NH36 hr, min and sec is a tad taller.
Therefore, the 7S or the 4R is more suitable.

    Hello.

I am thinking about buying a NE15 movement from cousins.uk (https://www.cousinsuk.com/search?SearchTerm=ne15+movement) and would like to have the day-date feature. It seems to be NE15C variant on the website. Considering this, can I simply attack a day wheel, or do I need any supplementary modifications to the movement in order to add a day wheel?

    1. Hi, the work is still the same for A, B and C.

Only different is some version C has been reported to have a stud missing. Which complicates the conversion.

      1. See pic in the article.

so I would need to swap the hour wheel and the day wheel from a movement with day-date such as 7S26 or NH36?

    1. Yes ……. if your version the stud is available. Otherwise you got to transplant from another movement

      1. andreivinshodragomir · ·

Okay. Thanks for clarifying this 🙂

      2. You’ll welcome.
        Happy modding !

  10. Hello,
    great Work!

Can you Tell Me if the Datewheel of the nh35 will fit in the 6r15?

    Kind regards

    Marc

    1. Hi Marc

      Fitment wise yes.

  11. Hi there,

I’m looking to replace the date wheel on my 6R15C. I’ve read some sources that state that 6R datewheels are different to your regular 7S26 or 4R35 wheels. Any chance you can confirm this, or can I simply use the regular NH35 wheel?
    Thank you.

    Best,
    Max

    1. You mean the DAY wheel ?

    2. 6R15 already has a DATE wheel.
