We saw the first trailer for Breath of the Wild 2 released over a year ago now, back at The Game Awards 2018.

Since then, we've heard precious little from Nintendo about the status of the game – there's been no trailers, no development updates, no gameplay reveals.

Fans are getting restless, and now more than ever they're eager to hear more about the status of the game.

Well, this week, dedicated fans at least got some good news as a new leak may have shed some light on the project courtesy of well-known game leaker and insider, Tyler McVicker.

Though McVicker is more typically involved with news and leaks about Valve games, the insider also has a Nintendo channel that has been accurate with its intel in months past.

Now, in a post on the Gaming leaks and rumours subreddit, McVicker's latest stream has been summed up and there are hints that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 will see the return of dungeons, and make the game far more linear in some respects.

"Unlike the first part, the game will be linear at the beginning. Canonically, Link already knows Hyrule, so there is no point in climbing the towers again" the redditor writes of Vicker's stream.

"Instead, the developers have filled the world with a miasmic version of Ganon, and until the infection is cleared from location to location, it will be impossible to move around the entire Hyrule."

What is Breath of the Wild 2?

  • Developer - Nintendo
  • Release date - TBD
  • Format - Nintendo Switch

At E3 2019, Nintendo confirmed that the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is now in development for Nintendo Switch.

Not much is known about the next game in the Legend of Zelda series, but it will most likely conform to the same style and gameplay features as the original.

Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma explained in an interview with Kotaku that an over-abundance of DLC ideas led to the decision to develop a full-blown sequel.

This means Nintendo may be addressing one of the most complained about aspects of the first game – a clear indication that the developer is listening to fan feedback.

"In this regard, the locations are worked out much deeper than in the original. At the very least, McVicker hints at the appearance of dungeons, strongly inspired by one game that knows a lot about spreading dungeons around the open world.

"In general, while designing the world of Breath of the Wild 2, developers was inspired by Red Dead Redemption 2 (officially known) and another unknown game."

Does this mean we're going to see the dungeons add amazing curated spaces in the depths, whilst the world opens out even more up top?

We'll let you know when we hear anything else official from Nintendo.
