UK weather forecast: Huge storm to trap Britain in ‘washing machine’ of wild weather

BRITAIN is about to be put through ‘a washing machine’ with a huge storm system to unleash five days of wind, rain, hail and thunder.

Torrential downpours will drench already saturated ground sparking a raft of flood alerts and warnings to ‘take immediate action’. A colossal low-pressure system anchored to the north of the UK will hurl bouts of heavy rain and gales towards Britain through the coming days, forecasters warn. Much of the country will be blighted through to the middle of the month with ‘no sign of an end’ to the foul weather.

Met Office meteorologist Luke Miall said: “The next weather system comes through on Monday bringing further rainfall across western and northwestern parts of the country where we could see another 20 to 30mm of rain.

“Through the rest of the week we are looking at blustery showers with gales in the west and the northwest, there will also be heavy showers with the risk of thunder and hail at times.

“We expect strong winds so while temperatures will be around average for the time of year, it is going to feel cooler.

“At the end of the week there will be the risk of more persistent bands of rain pushing into the UK, so overall there is no sign of an end to the unsettled conditions.”

Britain’s weather will be driven by a 1,600-mile cyclonic storm system which will wedge to the north-west between Greenland and Britain.

Mr Miall said: “This region of low pressure will affect the weather through Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

“It is very slow-moving to the north of the country and will take about three days to move south of Iceland to the north of Scotland.”

Met Office meteorologist Craig Snell added: “It is acting like a washing machine bringing bands of rain across through country through the week.

“We are slightly concerned about the rainfall as the totals will be totting up with further showers.”

The Environment Agency had last night (Sunday) issued 54 flood alerts and five more serious ‘immediate action required’ flood warnings.

Western and northern areas will be most at risk although alerts are in place across much of northern England and parts of the southeast.

An Environment Agency spokesman said: “Land, roads and some properties could flood and there could be travel disruption.”
