How To Fix MagSafe Case Lock Screen Sound Bug (iOS 14)
iPhone 12 & 12 Pro users complain about an annoying MagSafe case bug that tampers with system sounds such as Lock Screen and Keyboard clicks audio. These system sounds start playing weird every time after the new device is charged with the new wireless MagSafe charger and the magnetic case is on.
A working fix requires you to reboot your iPhone. but this troubleshooting method is only temporary because the bug will return as soon as you connect your iPhone 12 to the magnetic charger again.
Fact: The MagSafe animation plays out normally as well as all other audio on the device. Is just the system sounds that seem affected!
How To Fix MagSafe Case System Sounds Bug
1. Reboot iPhone
To force restart your device preform the following steps:
- 1. Click & release Volume Up.
- 2. Do the same with Volume Down, in quick succession.
- 3. Click & hold the Side Button until the Apple logo is displayed on the screen. Be patient until the device reboots. Input your Passcode and your Lock Screen sounds and Keyboard clicks should get back to normal.
2. Remove MagSafe Case
Most likely this bug has to be solved by Apple in an upcoming software update. Until then, if the problem is too annoying for you, just take off the MagSafe case and use a regular one.
In fact, we’re not sure if this is a bug or Apple is trying some MagSafe accessory exclusive sounds and they just messed up with the acoustic in the initial release. However, the general consensus is that the altered sounds caused by the MagSafe case aren’t an improvement to the traditional ones.
3. Try Out iOS 14.2 Beta
A third troubleshooting step that you could apply is update to the upcoming iOS 14.2 release by downloading the Public beta on your iPhone 12 or 12 Pro. However, this is time consuming and doesn’t guarantee a fix. A step-by-step guide about how to do it is available here.
We’ve been tipped about this issue, by Adam W. via our bug report page. He mentions:
“I have the 12 pro and the lock sound sounds weird when the magsafe case is on. It’s almost like it’s shortened and more tinny sounding. As soon as I remove the case the sound returns to normal.
Audio playback is fine otherwise, but for some reason the magsafe case is doing something to the system sounds”
We’ve also found a series of similar cases around the web. A different user, on Reddit claims that the Lock Screen sound on his iPHone 12 sounds twice as loud, while an other confirms that the system sounds glitch after every charge that involves the MagSafe charger.

Thank you for this !
Ive got the iphone 12 with a MagSafe Case on it , and had the same issue ! After your little workaround the sound is normal again , I hope apple will fix this , it was really really annoying
Patrick, you’re welcome. Glad we could help. Enjoy your new iPhone!
I have a cheap Amazon case (non magnetic) on my iPhone 12 pro and have the same issues. I do not use the new MagSafe charger. I have on occasion used a the Mophie wireless charging pad. that I’ve had for a couple years and used on older iPhone.
Broan, thanks for sharing your feedback. Does the lock screen sound bug kick-in only after you used the wireless charging pad? Does a reboot fix it? Does the problem re-occur if you don’t use the charging pad? Have you updated to iOS 14.2?
Lot’s of questions, I know, but we’re trying to isolate this issue. Waiting for your feedback. ;)

Silvia : “Magsafe charger on Iphone 12 Pro makes the phone sluggish. Lock button sound turns into a sharp sound rather than usual *click* sound.”
I have this problem on 12 pro with MagSafe case. Apple support told me to return the phone. Thanks for the tip, which will save me a lot of hassle.
AG, you’re welcome. Glad we could help.
Hello everybody, i have the iPhone 12 pro max and unfortunately after trying two times this tip, the click sounds still starts lower and then increase. If I wait few seconds the click sounds get back lower.
I have the original magsafe cover. I’ve removed it but the problem still exists.
Do you have any other suggestions?
Tony, have you upgraded your device to the latest iOS 14.2.1?
Hi Patricia, thanks for your quick response.
Yes, I have upgraded my device to iOS 14.2.1.
I have the same issue with my iPhone 12 Mini. Not only when I attach my Apple leather case, but also every time I charge using the magsage wireless charger. Reboot solves the problem, until I charge again (or change magsafe cover).
I hoped IOS 14.3 would solve the problem, but alas…
Eric, thanks for confirming that this bug is still present in iOS 14.3. Too bad. iOS 14.4 Beta 1 is out, let’s hope they will tackle this bug fix by the time of the public release.
I’m glad I found this article, I thought I was going nuts.
I have the iPhone 12 Pro Max. The exact same thing happens to me, except I don’t use the MagSafe case. I do, however, use the MagSafe charger. Every single time, the moment I take my phone off the MagSafe charger, the lock noise ends up changing to the loud one click noise. If I restart my phone, the lock noise goes right back to normal. I too have noticed that if I’m watching a YouTube video, playing a video game, or listening to iTunes, and then lock my screen while doing these activities, the lock screen noise goes back to normal. However, if I unlock my phone, close whatever app I was using, then the lock noise goes right back to being loud. Only restarting the phone helps…..until I use the MagSafe charger again.
I’ve contacted Apple for help. They have no idea what I’m talking about. Gives me little confidence they’ll fix it anytime soon….
Tyler, thanks for sharing your feedback. Yes, this is a strange bug indeed. I will report it one more time via feedback assistant. The more readers comment and confirm the issue, the more ‘weight’ the feedback will have. Do get back to us if you have any news.
I have the same issue with changing between any of the Apple MagSafe cases or removing the phone from the charger. I’m returning the MagSafe charger because of it. I’m not about to reboot my phone every time I take it off the charger. The Lock Screen sound becomes loud and tinny just as described. Reboot is the only fix.
Cyrene, thanks for your feedback. Are you planning to ask for a replacement unit and see if the problem persists, or you’ll return it for good. Do get back to us if you find something new.
