A JEALOUS barman and martial arts enthusiast is facing being jailed for life for murdering his wealthy Chinese girlfriend - who paid for his car, bills and rent.

Xixi Bi, 24, was killed by Jordan Matthews, 23, in a "vicious, sustained and prolonged attack" over a phone message from another man.

Clever Xixi spoke four languages - and had moved to Oxford as a teenager to further her education.

She was studying at university in Cardiff for a masters degree in international business when she fell for barman Matthews - showering him with gifts.

The pair met on the online dating site Plenty of Fish in April 2015.

But after their relationship began, Matthews allegedly began beating Xixi and forcing her to miss lectures.

Prosecutor Paul Lewis QC told the jury that Xixi would pay the rent, bills and bought Matthews a car.

Mr Lewis said: "He was manipulative and he was possessive in his attitude towards her.

"She was apologetic and even subservient in comparison. She lost weight, she became quiet and withdrawn and submissive."

Cardiff Crown Court heard Xixi was beaten in the house they shared in Llandaff in the Welsh capital, and was found with 41 different injuries.

Matthews dialled 999 minutes after the attack on August 19, last year, to say: "Well, me and her had a bicker last night and I hit her a few times.'

"'She fell asleep and then I had been really really horrible to her, I was really worried and now she's struggling to breathe."

Matthews, who called the operator "darling" as he explained that he had been "really, really horrible" to his diminutive girlfriend, had rained dozens of blows on her, causing "massive bruising" and multiple fractures.

One of the paramedics called to assist thought she was already dead when they arrived, the jury was told.

The court heard she went into cardiac arrest at 8.30am because of complications from her multiple injuries.

He later told officers he was a black belt in three martial arts, but then accepted that was not true.

The court heard he had attended karate classes and taught himself "snake fist" by watching Jackie Chan films.

He told cops he had always been interested in Chinese culture and wanted to meet a Chinese girl. He described Xixi as "perfect".

Xixi suffered dozens of injuries including multiple broken ribs, a broken jaw and severe bruising.

She also had healing fractures to alleged previous attacks. The court heard a weapon similar to a steel rod was used.

Mr Lewis said: "Matthews beat Miss Bi to death in her own home in a vicious, sustained and prolonged attack.

"Miss Bi was no match physically for the defendant, she was 5'1 and just over seven stone."

Mr Lewis told the court Xixi grew up in Nanjing, China, but came to the UK to study when she was just 15.

He said: "Ms Bi was born in China on April 24, 1992 and was 24 years old at the date of her death.

"She was initially educated in her homeland and when she was about 15 years old she and her brother were sent to the UK for further education."

The couple allegedly argued after Matthews saw what he believed to be a message on Xixi's phone from a dating website.

After he was arrested, Matthews said that he "felt the need to kick off because she didn't seem to care".

Matthews, of Llandaff, Cardiff, admitted manslaughter but denied murder.

But he was found guilty by a jury at Cardiff Crown Court today. He is due to be sentenced on Monday after submissions by the legal teams in the case.
