Gary-Ross Pastrana is a contemporary Filipino artist known for his multimedia works that explore themes of memory, history, and identity. Pastrana's work often incorporates a range of materials, including photography, video and found objects, to create complex and layered visual narratives that engage with the social and political realities of contemporary Philippines. Interested in the philosophies of art and the epistemologies of the art object, he often addresses the destruction and mutation of material, incorporating elements of performance, sound and installation, creating interactive experiences for viewers. Pastrana’s work deploys experimentation and poetics and centres on non-linear moving images and other fields of knowledge, such as language, music and science. The work offers a liminal space in many cases to unpack and live with various dichotomies of culture and nature - particularly exploring other approaches to humanity’s relationship with non-human animals.
