‘Vertebrae’ by Albert Yonathan Setyawan

Indonesian artist Albert Yonathan Setyawan’s pieces have been shown around the world, including the 55th Venice Biennale where he represented his country. Vertebrae, tucked away in the inner room of Mizuma Gallery at Gillman Barracks, is a ceramic sculpture that consists of a series of intriguing repeated column-like forms that span the length of the gallery wall. The distinct man-made nature of the ceramic objects that make up the artwork speak to the concept behind the title of the exhibition, “Apotheose.” The word apotheose represents the idea of transforming something that is ordinary into something considered divine — alone, each ceramic object is insignificant, but repeated together, they are transformed into a striking piece that confronts the viewer as soon as they enter the room.
