Rita Ponce de León was born in Lima, Perú in 1982 and is a 36 year old artist who now lives and works in Ciudad de México (Mexico City). León studied visual arts from 1999-2003 at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. After studying at Pontificia Universidad, León attended school in Mexico City at “La Esmeralda” from 2003-2008. The artist talks about her work as ways of interpreting conversations she has with people. Her works develop from these conversations into a way that records the interaction. She takes interest in how her drawings will be interpreted by the viewers, they are encouraged to try and find the meaning and representation behind their works. The drawings Rita Ponce de León creates range in mediums, from ink on paper to colored pencil, Chinese ink, and acrylic.  León creates not only single drawings that have been displayed in galleries and sold like, Spin, but she also creates wall paintings and reliefs.

One of her wall paintings includes her piece It is are that will sustain us, 2012 from the exhibition The Ungovernables Second New Museum Triennial at the Museum of Contemporary Art. This show was her first in the United States, and consisted of fifty-five participants in total. All of the artists in this show were born between the mid-1970s and the mid-1980s, and represented the generation after revolutionary and independence movements in different countries. Other examples of her wall paintings include her exhibition Endless openness produces circles. With this show León worked with architect Pablo Perez Palacios to transform the space into an area that makes viewers become aware of their body. León’s wall murals were invoking new perception and possibilities. Another show that pushed the boundaries of a gallery  was León’s exhibition With Your Own Hands, that split the gallery with a membrane. This work encourages viewers to interact with everything in the room including reaching through the membrane, as seen here http://juancanela.com/Rita-Ponce-de-Leon-Con-tus-propias-manos.
