Join The Ebell and Corita Art Center in welcoming author, artist, MacArthur Fellow Julie Ault in the inaugural talk for CAC’s new series: Catching Sight. Full of delightful surprises, Julie Ault will lead a presentation exploring the role of photography in Corita’s art, ideas, and pedagogy.

Corita Kent, also known as Sister Mary Corita, was an artist with an innovative approach to design and education. By the 1960s, her vibrant serigraphs were drawing international acclaim. Corita’s work reflected her concerns about poverty, racism, and war, and her messages of peace and social justice continue to resonate with audiences today. The camera was an essential tool for Corita, allowing her to look deeply and slowly at the world around her and, in her words, “view life without being distracted by content.” Ault will present images from CAC’s collection of more than fifteen thousand recently digitized 35mm slides. These photographs, taken between 1955 and 1968, depict everyday life in an extraordinary community and embody Corita’s philosophy of looking.

This event is made possible by lead sponsor Lazy Acres Natural Market- Los Feliz and supported in part by Immaculate Heart Community, National Endowment for the Arts, Ruth Arts Foundation, Teiger Foundation, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
