Biography and Works of Eduardo Chillida

San Sebastian, 1924 - 2002

Born on January 10, 1924. At the age of 18, in 1942, he began his studies to prepare for admission to the Higher Technical School of Architecture in the Polytechnic University of Madrid. In a few years he decided to abandon the entrance to the Architecture studies.

Sculptor, around 1946 he began to draw in the Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid. During this time he gets acquainted with life drawing. It is at this time where he makes his first sculptural pieces.

He later moved to Paris where his work began to take shape. He made his first sculptures in plaster.

In 1951 he returned to San Sebastian for good. He makes his first piece in iron, Ilarik, material that he will use throughout his life.

He defended the public work as a mechanism to guarantee access to his work instead of the realization of works of art in series. Some of his best-known works are not only found in public spaces, but are an intrinsic part of it; such as the Wind Comb in San Sebastian or the monumental Praise of the Horizon in Gijón.
