Martin’s American Theater Wing Antoinette Perry Award was engraved: “The American Theatre Wing Presents to Mary Martin This Award for her Performance in ‘The Sound of Music,’ 1959–60.” The award was Martin’s third and final Tony win. “An iconic piece honoring one of the most famous musicals of all-time,” Bobby Livingston, executive vice president at Boston aution house RR Auction, said in a statement. The medal was originally acquired from the estate of Martin’s son, actor Larry Hagman. Martin was cast as Maria von Trappin the original Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Broadway production of the iconic musical, which opened on November 16, 1959. The Sound of Music took home six Tony Awards at the 1960 Tony’s, including Best Musical. Martin died a month before her 77th birthday, on November 3, 1990, after a battle with cancer. The film adaptation of The Sound of Music, starring Julie Andrews as Maria, is currently celebrating its 50th anniversary.
