Claudio Parmiggiani produced his first “Delocazioni” in 1970, using powder, smoke, fire, soot, and ash to make imprints on paper and boards, a technique he has continued to mine for recent works on panel that depict veil-like forms of light, shade, and movement. In his collage, sculpture, installation, and photography, Parmiggiani explores ways of creating and manipulating images and objects, showing the influence of Giorgio Morandi, whose studio he frequented in the late 1950s, as well as Marcel Duchamp and Piero Manzoni.  Parmiggiani is an iconoclast, an ‘image-breaker’, a dissenter, a non-conformist.

Claudio Parmiggiani was born in Italy in 1943. His first major exhibition was held at Liberia Feltrinelli, Bologna in 1965. He has exhibited widely internationally and has made five appearances at the Biennale de Venezia (1972, 1982, 1984, 1986, 1995). A retrospective of his practice between 1960 and 1995 was shown at the Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporain, Geneva (1995). Whilst in recent years he has had several solo exhibitions at Galleria d’Arte Moderna di Bologna, Bologna (2003) Galerie Pascal Retelet, Brussels (2004), The Grand Palais, Paris (2005) and Galerie Cent8., Paris (2008).
