São Paulo School of Arts and Crafts
Lothar Charoux was born on February 5, 1912 in Vienna, Austria.
Lothar began his artistic studies with his uncle, the Austrian sculptor Siegfried Charoux. He came to Brazil in 1928 and settled in São Paulo. In the 1930s, he enrolled at the School of Arts and Crafts of São Paulo - LAOSP, where he met Waldemar da Costa, with whom, from 1940, he studied painting.
In 1928 Lothar Charoux came to São Paulo. In the 30's he entered the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios, where, in the following decade, he met Waldemar da Costa, with whom he worked together. He later became a teacher at the same Lyceum and Senai.
At that time, Charoux had not yet embarked on the paths of abstraction. Its initial phase was characterized by cubist-expressionist works, which had been slowly transformed over the years until it reached the limits of abstraction. Soon the artist would find his own brand and would be faithful to it to the end: abstract geometric composition.
In some of Lothar's works, the background was superimposed on lines, those in sharp colors, contrast with the other plane and gave an impression of stability until they were diverted, breaking the balance of the work. Other times those lines resembled strings of a musical instrument and seemed to vibrate by contrasting with the background color, usually black or neutral.
Lothar's first solo exhibition took place in 1947, at Galeria Itapetininga. He helped create the Ruptura Group in 1951 and the Visual Arts Association NT-New Trends in 1963. Moreover, in 1971 he was elected the best designer in São Paulo by the Association of Art Critics. Lothar Charoux gradually converted his work, experimented with various styles, and when he reached maturity in his abstraction, he did not abandon it any longer. He died in 1987, in the city of São Paulo, Brazil.
