Born in Greece and now living in New York, Maria Hassabi creates achingly slow-motion choreography. For the first two weeks of Documenta 14, her dancers wore pointy shoes and colorfully patterned clothing while they performed throughout Neue Neue Galerie’s pop-up exhibition in a former Kassel post office. Silent and intense, the performers sprawled on the gallery floor and leaned in twisted postures in the stairwell, holding poses and moving ever so imperceptibly as if to resemble living sculpture. The performance, which will be on show again September 11 through 17, forces viewers to stop, watch, and ultimately slow down themselves.
