Star Cinema goes edgy with ‘Unofficially Yours’

For its Valentine's Day presentation, Star Cinema has "Unofficially Yours," an edgy romance comedy starring John Lloyd Cruz and Angel Locsin. Its theme - one-night stands and the complication that comes with it.

Its director Cathy Garcia-Molina said that it's the first time for Star Cinema to deal with a love story that comes from one-night stands. The mature theme was also part of the reasons why Star Cinema took a long time before giving the said film project a go. The other reasons were John Lloyd and Angel's hectic working schedules.

How edgy is the film?

The director shared, "Star Cinema executives were jolted from their seats when they watched the whole film."

"The opening scene is my favorite. Yun din ang unang eksenang we shot because I wanted Angel and John to go through it like their characters in their first time together. Para sabay nilang pag daanan ang proseso...may shock element siya...lahat daw ng sexual fantasies ko nilabas ko dito," the director relates.

More than the steamy opening scene, what makes the whole movie edgy is its theme. It's the first time Star Cinema allowed a romance comedy based on a one-night stand. Though the director remarked that there's a lot of sex scenes between Angel and John Lloyd, it's still unofficial until you watch it.

"Parang ngayon lang po namin i-tackle ang ganito. Matapang-tapang siya and more edgy than our regular romcoms. So that's why it took awhile bago napayagang siya i-produce because the concept has been existing for three years already. Feeling ko tema yung bago," direk Cathy goes on.

She added that it is a theme she couldn't relate to when the idea was presented to her. It was because she was never in an "unofficial relationship" and never experienced a one-night-stand.

"We researched about it at nagulat ako that it's been going around. Marami palang gumagawa ng ganung relasyon na di-pinag-uusapan," Direk Cathy quipped. It will not be all sex though. They may have a similar theme with some Hollywood movies like Justin Timberlake's "Friends with Benefits" but it is different because of its Filipino perspective. It has heart and that's the core of "Unofficially Yours." The movie opens on February 15 in 100 theaters nationwide.
